Maybe Susanna was married to a Jung, had John and Elisabeth, and then
after remarrying, had the first children baptized as Roths??

don't know the father's name. I'm guessing the name is Daniel Smith now. Also
guessing that he's a son of Melchior Schmidt. It would seem like this could
be the father of "Daniel Smith's boys" in the letter from Jesse Smith. But if
he was referring to a brother, I doubt he'd have mentioned the last name. Perhaps
Daniel Smith was a cousin of John and Jesse?
see notes on death certificate for Daniel Smith 1827-1907. It is filled out
by Daniel's son Josiah Smith, but has entries for the deceased with
father as Danial Smith and mother Harriet Wetzel. Harriet was the
deceased's wife, not mother. So was the father of deceased filled
out correctly or not?

more onthis family is in "Mosers of Schuylkill" by G. Paul Moser, Route 5,
Box 510, Danville, PA 17821, in 1979. He describes the Smiths and that their
mother was a Baily. John Baily was the kids' uncle. Mary Werner was John's housekeeper.
The Smith origins were unknown but Paul brings up a Jacob Smith, Albany Twp
supervisor as being in the area of the early Baily's of Berks Co.
also note, in a letter from Jesse Smith (Ohio) to brother John, he asks where
"Daniel'sboys are". He also references a "John Smith" in the OH area who appears to
be a relative. Since he expects John Smith (recipient of letter) to know about Daniel's
boys, it would appear they were local in Schuylkill county.Daniel married Susan BAILY Bef 1828, Schuylkill Co, PA. Susan was born 11 Feb 1800, PA; died 24 Apr 1868, Barry Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

(I don't believe that is the right JohnSmith family. Certainly the child listing does
not match this John and Magdalena at all (wrong names/ages), but also the
neighbors appear to be folks down in western U. Mahantongo Twp.
Perhaps John was off with family in Ohio since his father just died??)
Also - I looked at the original census (not just the abstract), to see if there was some
chance that the children's names were on adifferent page, or some other confusion,
and it looks like there was just another family in the area. Note that this person is
a laborer, while the John I'm looking for was a house builder, and farmer with his own land.

... The paternal grandfather of Daniel H. Smith was also named John Smith and was
among the pioneer carpenters and boat builders of Pottsville. He located in Eldred
township in an early day and both he and his son John S. were identified with the
development of that township, contributing their share toward its material growth and
prosperity. They owned farms which they tilled in connection with their mechanical
work.

father Danial Smith, born Penna
mother Harriet Wetzel, born Mahantonga
informant Josiah Smith, Deep Creek or Higgins __?
No doctor or corroner, fell from back of mule on head either a fracture of skull or of spine
The problem is that Harriet Wetzel was this Daniel's wife.So the "mother" spot
is filled in with his wife. That begs the question of whether the informant Josiah
was thinking of his father (ie, Daniel) when they filled in that, or the deceased Daniel's
father. It's not clear to me that this is enough evidance to say that Daniel's father
was a Daniel Senior.
The one letter from Jesse Smith (who went to Ohio) referred to "Daniel Smith's boys"
which I had already guessed was the father of the nearby Barry Twp boys. So
I was happy to see Daniel Smith listed as the father of this Daniel. Still, as mentioned
above, I have reservations on accepting this theory yet.Daniel married Harriet WETZEL 6 Jul 1851, Barry Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. Harriet was born 5 Aug 1829; died 20 Jun 1891, Barry Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

I suspect that Margaret Schlabig was a daughter of Jacob Klock Sr and went by
the nickname Peggy. Perhaps without children, Daniel Schlabbig and she left
their farm to Daniel S Smith (see land agreement of 4 Nov 1854) since he was
taking care of them.
Note that Margaret is a "boarder" in 1880, not listed as a relative.

John S. Smith was a Republican in political preferences, and a member of the

From the "Putnam County Sentinel" - Ottawa, Putnam Co., OH - Friday, April 12, 1918.
"MR. GEORGE SCHMIDT - NINETY YEARS OF AGE, BURNS TO DEATH IN HOME
NEAR LEIPSIC
On Wednesday evening, April 10 about nine o'clock, the home of George
Schmidt, on the Gore's road northeast of Leipsic Junction, was discovered on
fire. Thebuilding was of frame construction and finished with plastering
boards and paper, causing the fire to spread with great rapidity. Mr.
Orville Young, a mail carrier of Leipsic, was the first to discover the fire
and arrive on the scene. Through the flames the gathering neighbors could
see Mr. Schmidt sitting in a rocking chair in the front room. But the flames
were already bursting through the doors and windows and it was impossible for
any human being to approach the burning building, let alone to enter and
attempt the rescue of Schmidt. Friends and neighbors were compelled to stand
helplessly by while the flames in savage cruelty reduced the aged man to ashes.
Mr. Schmidt, though 90 years of age, was still engaged in purchasing eggs
and poultry from the farmers, and was out on Wednesday as usual. Returning
home Wednesday evening, he unhitched his horse and putting the halter over
the bridle tied him in the stable and retired to the house. The theory of
his friends is that he had suffered a stroke of paralysis, or being chilled
by the cold winds of Wednesday and was resting and warming by the fire when
the warmth of the fire kindled in the stove brought on restful sleep, and
that he did not awaken as the stove became hotenough to set fire to the
building. He apparently had answered the last callas the fire raged, for at
no time was he noticed to make any move or struggle.
Mr. Schmidt leaves a son, Felix, who runs a drug store at Hamler, and a
daughter, Mrs. Phillip Wise, residing near Leipsic.
His children, friends and the community are shocked by the tragedy which
brought a soul home to its last resting place."
