(Biographical Publishing Company, Bucks Co, pg 33)
The great-grandfather of our subject, John Hellings, was born about 1752, and
resided in Bristol township, where he was engaged in farming. He was supervisor
and filled many township offices. He was twice married, his first wife being Anna
Bennett, by whom he reared five children: two sons, John and Samuel; and three
daughters. His second marriage was with Hannah Bowman, a daughter of Daniel
Bowman, and they raised three sons and five daughter, namely Tunis; Jonathan;
Mary; Lucretia (Mrs.Paxton), now residing at Bristol; Katherine; Martha; and Hannah.
The family were members of the Christian Church at Tullytown, inthe building of
which in 1822 John Hellings was largely instrumental. He died about 1837, while
his wife died in 1852.
Tunis Hellings, the grandfather of our subject, was a native of Middletown township,
and he reared the following children: John; Jacob; Nathan; Tunis; Margaret;
Mary; Rachel; and Elizabeth. He died in 1811. [but Tunis, s/o John of Bristol
was born 3 Mar 1818! seemsto be cross of two Tunis Hellings]
Jacob Hellings, the youngest child born to his father, was born in Middletown
township, in 1811; he was a farmer in early life, but later went ot Bridesburg,
Philadelphia County, where he conducted the old Arsenal Hotel for a period of
twenty years; he then moved to Philadelphia, and located on Second
street, between Race and Vine streets, and there conducted a hotel a short time.
This proving a failure, as he lost about $100.00 per month, he moved in 1859 to
Middletown Cross Roads, then known as Helling's Cross Roads; he purchased
the tavern located there, and conducted the same until his death, which occurred
Jan 27, 1879. etc. etc.
He was married to Elizabeth Hunter, who was born in this county in 1814, and
they were blessed by the following children: Lewis J.; Rachel, the wife of William
C. McEuen; Nathan died young; Jacob A.; James P., our subject; and Sarah F.,
the wife of the late Howard Roberts. etc etc.
James P. born 2 Oct 1848 in White Hall, Philadelphia County, Pa.
on pg 312:
John Hellings, the grandfather of our subject, was born about 1752, and resided
in Bristol township the major part of his days, engaged in the cultivation of the soil.
He was a very prominent man of his day, serving as supervisor of the town, and
holding many other township offices. His first was was Anna Bennett, by whom
he reared two sons, John andSamuel, and three daughters. His
second wife was Hannah Bowman, a daughter of Daniel Bowman, and this
union resulted in the advent of three sons and five daughters,
namely: Jesse; Tunis; Jonathan; Mary; Lucretia; Katherine; Martha; and Hannah.
Lucretia is now Mrs. Paxson, and lives in Bristol, Pa. Mr. Hellings and family were
prominent members of the Christian Church at Tullytown, andhe was one of the
organizers of that society and had charge of the erection of the church in 1822.
He died in March, 1837, while his wife died in 1852.
Jesse Hellings, the father of our subject, was born in Bristol township in 1812, and
spent his entire life on the old homestead, having purchased a part of the interests
of the heirs upon the death of his mother. etc.
His wife was Elizabeth La Rue, of Falls township, born in 1815,John married Anna BENNETT Bef 1797, Bucks Co, PA. Anna was born Abt 1766; died Bef 1812, Bucks Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

The Bensalem Methodist Episcopal church is a flourishing organization.
When the congregation was first organized we do not know, but down to 1810
the meetings were held at private houses. For several years previous they
held an annual camp-meeting in one of the pleasant groves of the
township, holding it in Jacob Hellings' woods in 1804. The congregation
felt numerous and strong enough by 1810 to erect a church, and a house was
built that year on a lot given by Joseph Rodman.Jacob married Charlotte RODMAN 24 Aug 1800, First Baptist Church, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA. Charlotte was born Abt 1780, PA; died Bef Nov 1812, Bucks Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

(or Ann Ettinger who showed up in 1850?)

They have this Jacob as a son of Tunis, son of John III of Bristol...
Jacob Hellings, the youngest child born to his father, was born in Middletown

Philadelphia County, where he conducted the old Arsenal Hotel for a period of
twentyyears; he then moved to Philadelphia, and located on Second
street, between Race and Vine streets, and there conducted a hotel a short time.
This proving a failure, as he lost about $100.00 per month, he moved in 1859 to
Middletown Cross Roads, then known as Helling's Cross Roads; he purchased the
tavern located there, and conducted the same until his death, which occurred
Jan 27, 1879. etc. etc.
He was married to Elizabeth Hunter, who was born in this countyin 1814, and they
were blessed by the following children: Lewis J.; Rachel, the wife of William C.
McEuen; Nathan died young; Jacob A.; James P., our subject; and Sarah F.,
the wife of the late Howard Roberts. etc etc.

Martha had died before her stepmother. Her husband's estate:

six children: Rachel Clevenger, Francis, John, Nathan B., Lucretia Matilda
and Ann Elizabeth.
Rachel's will mentions grandchildren:
John White, Francis White, Rachel Clevenger so it would seem they
are the only children of Martha.
Since Rachel's will gives out ten parts to ten kids, but omits Martha's kids, I
wonder if Rachel wasn't really a child of Tunis Hellings and a first earlier
wife.Martha married Francis WHITE 15 Aug 1810, Bucks Co, PA. Francis was born Abt 1790; died Jun 1850, Bucks Co, PA. [Group Sheet]
