Clues about hischildren's lives come from his son, Frederick Harp or Herb, who
applied for pension for his Revolutionary War Service on Jan. 8, 1833 in Luzerne
Co., Huntington Twp., Pennsylvania. He was 76 at the time. He enlisted in the
war in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1777 for seventeen months. He served
part of this time under Lafayette. He was born in East District Twp., Berks Co.,
PA in 1756.He did not know the exact date, but suspected the Church books
in East District might have it. In 1810 he moved to Columbia Co., Pennsylvania
and then to Huntington, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania in 1814. He died two weeks
after his final move to Montgomery Co., Ohio on Nov. 21, 1833. (C-547)

the baptism at Falckner Swamp, New Hanover says her name is Maria Catharine,
but I'm pretty sure it's really this "Maria". Perhaps the Catharine was confused
with the sponsor's name.

the entry in the will book in Reading and the will abstracts is wrong. She and
her sister married Adam Frey. That is obvious from the church records at Oley Hill
as well as the estate records for Adam Frey. Closer inspection of the original German
will of Jacob Herb shows that the name there really is Adam Frey.

despite the slight difference in birth dates between the baptism and tombstone for
John Smith (which tombstone doesn't exist now), I think Melchior is the likely father.
Consider:

- the county history describes John Smith as being an early boat builder and carpenter
in Pottsville (which was part of Norwegian Twp originally).
- there was aMelchior Smith in Norwegian Twp in 1830 (census).
- a Henry Smith appears in nearby Barry Twp at that time. This Henry later appears
in Van Wert Co, OH. County histories there talk about them going from PA to Stark Co
and then to Van Wert. Henry's wife and Melchior and Dorothy are all buried together
(no stone for Henry).
- a letter exists from Jesse Smith to brother John Smith (in possession of a decendent
of John) mentioning "Henry" who is out in Ohio with him and appears to be a brother.
Jesse also mentions going back to "see the place" in Pottsville one more time.
- a marriage record appears for Jesse Smith and Nancy in Stark County (matching the
names in the 1850 census of Van Wert and the location of Henry Smith, as if they all
moved together to Startk Co and then Van Wert).
- Melchior Smith and Dorothea have several children baptized in the Reading area,
including a John (at the time this one would have been born) and a Joseway (Jesse?).
There is a gap in known baptisms where Henry's birth would fit. Also, the sponsor of a
Catharine Smith to Henry in 1831 would fit the Catharine d/o Melchior.
- In summary, it appears that Melchior was the father of all these people and that
he moved to Ohio, leaving at least John behind (or maybe John went and came back).
It's still not clear where some of theSmiths mentioned in Jesse's letter fit in (ie, John
and Daniel's kids).

Note: I wonder if the marriage at Trinity, Nicholas Schmidt to Dorothea Schmidtin
on 12 May 1799 could be a typo - maybe it's really Melchior?? There is no Nicholas in
any other church records of this time or the 1800 census. was it s/o Nicholas?

farm there which is now the property of his grandson, Samuel M. Zartman.
He diedApril 30, 1857, very suddenly, while engaged in burning brush;
he was sittingon a fence when overtaken by the stroke which ended his
life instantly. He isburied at St. Peter's church, at Mahanoy. His

1867. They had a son Joseph, born May 11, 1833, who died Dec. 21, 1858.

more onthis family is in "Mosers of Schuylkill" by G. Paul Moser, Route 5,
Box 510, Danville, PA 17821, in 1979. He describes the Smiths and that their
mother was a Baily. John Baily was the kids' uncle. Mary Werner was John's housekeeper.
The Smith origins were unknown but Paul brings up a Jacob Smith, Albany Twp
supervisor as being in the area of the early Baily's of Berks Co.

also note, in a letter from Jesse Smith (Ohio) to brother John, he asks where
"Daniel'sboys are". He also references a "John Smith" in the OH area who appears to
be a relative. Since he expects John Smith (recipient of letter) to know about Daniel's
boys, it would appear they were local in Schuylkill county.

the copy of the above estate record shows that at some point, paper work was begun
to complete the estate. It looks like a "release" form, but was never signed by
everyone and for some reason was never completed and filed in the county courthouse.

Note discrepancy with tombstone. 11 Nov 1802 in baptism,
11 Dec 1803 from supposed tombstone reading (source Dr. Meiser)

Tim - I found the following on Jesse and Henry Smith:

1850 Census, Tully township, Van Wert County, Ohio, pg 375, house 391
SMITH, Jesse age 35 male, farmer, born Pennsylvania $150
" , Nancy age 35 wife born Pennsylvania
" , Mary A. age 10dau born Ohio
" , Basha/Bashae age 2 son born Ohio (probably Basha/Basheba - check Bash*)

This is all there is on Jesse Smith - He was notfound on the 1860 census in
Van Wert county, Ohio so must have moved.

A letter from Jesse Smith to John Smith (was this translated from German?)
Jun 12th 1852 Vanwert County Ohio

Dear
Brother I lift my pen to inform you that we are all well at present hoping that these
few line may find you enjoying thesame blessings/ we have all been sick since
last harvest nearly ____ time butbut we are better now __ was very sickly out
here last fall more than it hasbeen since I have been out here / we had an
uncomen wet summer so much wet that even is almost a failure and that I
suppose was the cause of so much sickness / we have three children living two
girls and one boy and we have three boys dead / I have forty acres of good land
and I have A good opining made on it so that I soon will be able to live without
working so hard as I have done / there is not A stone on the forty acres large
enough to kill A bird with and I have A good house and barn on it and well of
never failing water / I rased fifty bushels of wheat last year and I thin I will have
more than that next year.

We have the great western rail road laid throug here and they will be to work on it as soon as the middle of march / it goes gust one half mile north of me and has much? land / A good deal more valuable hear than it was before it waslaid out and we expect it will be made in two years so that the cars will run from fort wayne Indiana to
Philadelphia and then I think I will go and see youa / I can then go to Potsville
in about 36 hours and I think I will go and see the place once more / I want you to
write to me soon and when you do let me know where Daniel Smiths boys is and
what they are doing, Henry and his familythe last time I saw him was all well
and he is doing well / he lives five miles from me but I see him often / he has
one hundred and sixty acres of land and is getting it cleared up fast as posible.
John Smith lived in Paulding County about __ miles from me and was all __ this
last fall __ doing well / John Smith and his wife have joined the methodist church
and have got very religious.
Wheat here is worth 48 cents pr bushel and corn sels for forty cents and themthat has
potatoes for sale askes 75 cents pr bushel. pork is four dollars pr hundred
