From Floyd's History of Northumberland County, pg 49 (similar info on pg 123):
DUNKELBERGER, a name well represented in Northumberland county,
originated, according to tradition, from Dunkel Berg, a spur of the
Black Forest. Little is known ofthe Dunkelbergers before the time of
the Reformation. During that period they espoused the cause of the
Reformers, and their descendants to the present day have continued to
adhere to Protestant denominations. Up to the time of their emigration
to the New World they were industrious and patriotic citizens ofwhat is
now the Kingdom of Wurtemberg, in lower Germany, but being deprived
there of their religious liberty they turned to America, coming hither
in 1728by way of the Rheinfeld, down the Rhine to Holland, whence they
sailed in theEnglish ship "Morehouse," landing at Philadelphia Aug. 28,
1728. They proceeded at once to what is now Berks county, Pa., locating
in Windsor township, a little southeast of what is now the borough of
Hamburg. They were frequently molested by the Indians. These emigrants
were Clement, Daniel and John Dunkelberger. Clement who was the
ancestor of the others (the name of his son Daniel, however, does not
appear in his will), at once paid taxes to the English Crown. "Clementz
Doncleberger" is on the first list of taxables of Windsor township
(1754). He paid 6 tax in 1759. At the time of his death, in 1782, his
homewas in Windsor township. His will, made Feb. 12, 1776, was
probated April 8,1782, and is on record in Will Book B, page 38. At the
time the will was madehis wife Anna Maria was still living. Their
children were (no record of Daniel): Clemens, who obtained the
plantation; Catherine, married to Andrew Winiger; Mrs. John Beck; John;
Frederick; Christopher; Elizabeth, married to MichaelDeck; Philip;
Sevila; Magdalena; and Dorotha.

From Floyd's History of Northumberland County, pg 49:
John Dunkelberger, grandson of Clement, was born in Windsor
township, near Hamburg, in 1740.He married there and had two sons by
that marriage, in 1780 (at which time hewas a widower) moving with his
son George to the northern part of the MahanoyValley, in Northumberland
county - that part of Mahanoy now embraced in Little Mahanoy township.
He received from the State, a warrant for more than two hundred acres of
land, located north of Line Mountain and between that and Mahanoy creek.
The Indians were his neighbors, and were friendly to him, but during the
terrible Indian disturbances his family on several occasions had to flee
for safety. There he built a stone grist mill and stone dwelling house.
In 1814 he is credited with a grist and saw mill on Mahanoy creek which
mill is said to have been the first in that section. He built the mill
several years after locating in that district. On the John Dunkelberger
homestead still stands a large stone house, 45 by 35 feet in dimensions,
and two and a half stories high, which was built in 1818, the year in
which this pioneer died. Large, well-selected stones were used in its
construction and the wall is exceptionally strong.
After settling here John Dunkelberger married again and had two
sons by his, second wife, Solomon and Jonathan, from whom most of the
Dunkelbergers arc descended. These pioneers are buried on their own
farm on an elevation below a piece of pine woods, about fifty feet
northeast from a public road. Their graves are marked by marble
tombstones, inscribed as follows:

Notes:
I'm honestly not entirely comfortable with all of this family. The linkage
to Magdalena, wife of John Klock is a little weak - probably based solely
on the baptismal sponsors which further requires saying that yes, the tombstone
birth date doesn't match the one from the baptism.
Also, the linkage to Daniel Hill seems to be based on him having a Betty
Dunkelberger in his will, and Christopher Dunkelberger and wife Elisabeth
- last explicitly named in 1784 at Himmel. Latter records show only Christopher D.
and wf. Also note that in Floyd's book on Northumberland County, under the Ferster
family, he has Eva wife of Christopher (the other Christopher 1-42- well documented) but
also a Catharine wife of Christopher Dunkelberger. who is that?? Probably OK
overall though, but these loose ends need wrapped up.

Notes:
I'm still bothered by the fact that her birth date in the baptism is differentfrom
that on the tombstone. The tombstone has at St Pauls has died 15 Aug 1855,
age 77-3-3, which works out to 12 May 1778 instead of 12 Feb 1777. At least
the "12" is right, and I could take being off a year, but with the month, too, I always
have a little doubt. Still, the baptism sponsorships strongly suggest the Dunkelberger
relation. Also, someone doing the math wrong may be explainable.
A possible sceneraio is that Magdalena, who was absent in the 1850 census,
had moved up to Shamokin area with grandson Benjamin Klock. When she
died, he buried her locally and may have been off on her birth date.
4/12/00 - I found the account records for Magdalena Klock in the Northumberland
County courthouse. Isaac Snyder was the administrator (he was married to Magdalena's
granddaughter Elizabeth). Inventory was done 14 Mar 1856. Various dispersements
were made, but uncertain what happened to remainder. See Orphan's Court

Mark was the fourth son of: Adam Fox and Elizabeth Derrick. He married Anna Dickey about 1818-19, shortly after her arrival in Sevier County. Anna was from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and was the daughter of John and Phoebe (Daniels) Dickey.
Mark was a farmer and owned land south of his father's place near Bird's Cross Roads. During the Civil War, Mark was killed by Confederate soldiers because of his Union sympathies, The story of Mark's death at the hands of the Confederate is included In Edward R. Walker III's Tales From The Civil War:
"In 1862 or 3 a company of Rebel soldiers made a raid down the Newport road. Near where Seldon Hill lived, a mountaineer took: a shot at them, wounding their doctor in the arm. That made them mad. They continued on down the road. Just west of Haskew's Chapel in Chestnut Hill, an old negro, Findley Patterson lived. He saw them coming and took leg-bail. and saved his hide. At Bird's Grass Roads, the Rebels went south 2 or 3 hundred yards to where Mark Bird, my grandfather (John's) brother lived. They shot Mark (Bird) and set his house on fire. In the meantime, Grandfather Fox had started to Chestnut Hill to get some news of the war. After the killing of Uncle Mark (Bird), the Rebs went on down the road. Uncle Joe Shrader saw them and hid in a large brush pile on top of the hill where Aunt Edna Fox lived. The Rebs and Grandfather (Fox) met opposite Uncle Joe, who could see and hear all they said and all they did. (The Rebs) began to curse and abuse Grandfather for being a Union(ist). He gave them a bawling out, then the commanding officer gave orders to shoot (Grandfather Fox) and all the other men they saw. After the Rebs had gone on, Uncle Joe went on home and sent some of his children to tell (my) mother (Charlotte Fox) and sisters Rebecca,
Phoebe and Emily). They took a horse and sled and went after (Grandfather Fox). Their only brother (Mathias or Branson) was a prisoner of: war. All other Union(ists) had to hide out regardless of age."
The preceding story was submitted by Thomas de Arnold Byrd of Florence, Texas as told to him by his mother, (Charlotte Fox Bird!.
