    I remember grandma's English roses with whitish pink peddles, that intertwined her front porch trellis. Sitting out on the front porch sipping ice tea, smelling the fragrant aroma of roses, and watching the delicate white peddles float to the ground. Grandma always was canning something and storing them in the cellar. When we would arrive at grandma's, she would point to the kitchen and we would run to the bread box as she said, you kids want a pretzel?

    Notes:

    Hatten Yoder enlisted in the army during world war two . He was a soldier stationed in Germany during the German invasion that ended European war . He was able to understand the Germans having grown up speaking Pennsylvania Dutch , a dialect of German . Hatten told his sister Betty that it was easy for him to speak and understand the Germans .
    After the war Hatten came home and set out on an adventure in the Yukon territories of Canada and Alaska searching for gold . He was fairly successful and bought nine acres to set up a gold mining operation in the Yukon territory . Eventually the operation was turned into a tourist , pan for gold, operation.
    Hatten married twice and had three children , Bonnie, Kay, and Billy . His two wives were the Suella and Regina.

    Former longtime Fairbanks resident Hattan Lewis Yoder, 88, passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, at Kah Tai Care Center in Port Townsend, Wash., where he had resided for the past four years. He had moved to Washington to be near his daughter, Bonnie, and her husband.
    H.L., as he preferred to be called, was born May 8, 1918, in Locustdale, Pa.
    He had a very interesting life. He served in World War II. In 1942, H.L. married Sue Hutchenson and they had three children.
    After the war, H.L. became a long haul truck driver on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
    In the early 1950s, H.L. came to Fairbanks to work on a gold dredge and returned every summer for several years before settling here permanently in the late 1950s. He also worked on the Distant Early Warning line as a heavy equipment operator and also transported mobile homes to Alaska from Montana and Idaho.
    H.L. and Sue divorced in the mid-’60s and he later married E. Regina White.
    They spent many years traveling in their motor home during the winters and spending summers gold mining on Adams Creek in Dawson, Yukon.
    He is survived by his son, Bill Yoder of Billings, Mont.; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Garry Chandler of Fairbanks and Bonnie and Larry Slay of Port Townsend, Wash.; grandchildren and their spouses, Tammy and Ron Baxter of Fairbanks, Rebecca Chandler of Fairbanks, Vicky and Tim Marrone of Pennsylvania, Kim Yoder of Pennsylvania, Kenny and Tish Yoder of Pennsylvania, Ethan and Jenny Slay of Seattle; great-grandchildren, Kaylen, Dustin and Amber Baxter of Fairbanks, Isabell Chandler of Fairbanks, Nathanial and Madalin Marrone of Pennsylvania and Samantha and Lucas Yoder of Pennsylvania; three brothers and two sisters.
    H.L. was preceded in death by his wife, Regina, in 2004.
    At his request there will be no service and the cremains of H.L. and Regina will be scattered together over Adams Creek where they spent so many good days mining and entertaining their friends.

    WWII Navy veteran, two tours of duty. Stationed in the South Pacific for most of his Navy career as a Machinest Mate.
    He earned a BS in Engineering and stared a Masters Degree at the Univeristy of Southern California.
    He was an engineer for the Navel Underwater Ordinance Test Station of Pasedena, California for more than 35 years. After retirment he became a realestate broker.
