From ancestory.com message boards:
My gf was James J. McDevitt, dob 7-24-1873 in Philadelphia, Pa. The birth dateis in our family bible. He told me his birthplace was Phila. but I have no written record and do not know the names of his parents or siblings. I believe he told me there were
brothers and possibly a sister. Census records indicate he told the census taker his
mother and father were born in Ireland and he Phila.
He married Annie G. Larson (somethimes used name Lawson) 1896 in Phila. This
confirmed by city records and St. Thomas Acquinas Church. My mother (only child
who lived) was born in Phila. in 1997 and I have her birth certificate.
My gf said he was a street car conductor in Phila. (census in Phila. indicateshe was
a "cooper") but moved to Cologne, N.J. (near Atlantic City) because ofpollution
causing respiratory problems. He purchased a small farm and became a "huckster".
He would sell fruits and vegetables from an open truck in Atlantic City.
I'm stuck to look any farther as I don't have his parent's names. Ihave had good
luck on my mother's (Larson) side however. I'd appreciate any help you could give me.
The only thing I know for sure is the name written inthe family bible and it is
James J. McDevitt born 7/24/73
"Now, to furtherconfuse things, I found a birth record of a James W. McDevitt with
the same dob as my grandfather. This record shows the parents to be John
McDevitt and Susan Dougherty."
** Rest of the text:Thanks for responding. Sounds like you and I are in the same boat.
The only thing I know for sure is the name written in the family bible and it is James
J. McDevitt born 7/24/73. I don't know thenames of his parents but the 1900
census and subsequent census records where I have located him indicate his
parents were both born in Ireland. I also found a marriage record. It is in both the
city and church records. The birth dateof James is one day off and the birthdate
of my grandmother (if it ismy grandmother) is the same. On the marriage
certificate his name is listed as James Jos. McDevitt. I suppose the Jos.
means Joseph. The problem with my grandmother's entry is that her name
have always thought was Annie G. Larson. This marriage certificate is for
Annie G. Lawson. I was willing to accept it as their's until I found in the 1920
census where my grandparents had my grandmother'sbrother living with them.
His name is listed as Larson.
Now, to further confusethings, I found a birth record of a James W. McDevitt
with the same dob as mygrandfather. This record shows the parents to be
John McDevitt and Susan Dougherty.
My GF always claimed to have been born in Philadelphia but I've been unable to
locate a birth record either in the cic
