  Denise Wells found that the original researcher of the "original" popular account of the Merkel family: "The Merkel, Merkle, Markle, Markel Freundschaft by Norton W. Merkel.", research by Gustav Anjou, was suspect. Apparently Gustav was better at taking people's money and spinning tales, than he was at doing genealogical research. Denise points to this web site: http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/fraud/fraud223.htm as a source for debunking Gustav's work. Time to bag all that stuff of the roaming European Merkel's and start over.
