- don't know the father's name. I'm guessing the name is Daniel Smith now. Also
guessing that he's a son of Melchior Schmidt. It would seem like this could
be the father of "Daniel Smith's boys" in the letter from Jesse Smith. But if
he was referring to a brother, I doubt he'd have mentioned the last name. Perhaps
Daniel Smith was a cousin of John and Jesse?
see notes on death certificate for Daniel Smith 1827-1907. It is filled out
by Daniel's son Josiah Smith, but has entries for the deceased with
father as Danial Smith and mother Harriet Wetzel. Harriet was the
deceased's wife, not mother. So was the father of deceased filled
out correctly or not?

more onthis family is in "Mosers of Schuylkill" by G. Paul Moser, Route 5,
Box 510, Danville, PA 17821, in 1979. He describes the Smiths and that their
mother was a Baily. John Baily was the kids' uncle. Mary Werner was John's housekeeper.
The Smith origins were unknown but Paul brings up a Jacob Smith, Albany Twp
supervisor as being in the area of the early Baily's of Berks Co.
also note, in a letter from Jesse Smith (Ohio) to brother John, he asks where
"Daniel'sboys are". He also references a "John Smith" in the OH area who appears to
be a relative. Since he expects John Smith (recipient of letter) to know about Daniel's
boys, it would appear they were local in Schuylkill county.
