  • Notes
    • Name Suffix: Senior

but marriage record says his father was George! This contradicts the other
stories of this family. I'm going with George since it's there in German from a primary
      source.

      will 2:8

      at Frankenthal Church:
      Johan Jacob 1708, sp ?
      Margaretha Catharina 1710, sp ?

Anna Franzina 1717, sp Johann Adam Baumann and Anna Franzina
Maria Appolonia 1719, sp Appolonia Rexberia

sp - 1730 John Casper Stoever (Moselem)

      Notes on wives:
      LDS AFN:G77M-6T says various wives?
      M1 Jemima Weurtz (1680-1770)
M2 Catharina Brucker (had his kids)
      M3 Maria or Eva Kelchner

?came with Jemima Weurtz who had land near Kennett Square in Philadelphia in 1703
then returned home, thus first Merkel in PA?? Seems dubious to me.

?the claim that he married a Kelchner is based on the sponsor Eva Kelchner in 1749
at Moselem. Nah! That's probably Christian Jr and another single person as sponsors.
No big deal there. Certainly not enough information to create another wife!!

Land (LCHS, Misc 2, pg 106):

      Phil Knox:
He was originally German reformed by religion and by 1704 was a Cartwright
by trade in Lambesheim. That year hisproperty located there was evaluated
at "100 Florins". On April 19, 1719 he sold his house in the Vordergrasse
and (in company with his parents) fled fromthe wars and persecutions that
had followed the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. They came down the
Rhine River to settle in Amsterdam (Holland). About1732 he left Holland
and came to America where he settled in the Maxatawny Valley near Moselem
Springs (then called Mosillia Creek) in Richmond Township, Berks County,
Pennsylvania. On May 7, 1734, he took up 150 acres and 6 years later (Apr
23 1740) took another patent of an additional 150 acres, and then again on
Jul 9, 1741 another 50 acres. All of this farm land was located in an area
of Richmond Township known as "The Flat". He eventually acquired a total
of 1500 acres there. He had a wagon-makers shop, a blacksmith shop, and a
grist-mill on his property. He became naturalized as a British subject on
23 Mar 1741 at the Philadelphia Courthouse. On Nov 16, 1751, he gave 175
acres ofland to his son, George, "For natural love and affection and for
other considerations, and five pounds in current money of Pennsylvania to
him in hand given". He and his entire family were members of the Moselem
Lutheran Church and the tombstones of many "Merkel" still exist (1989) in
the cemetery next to thepresent day church building. Christian made his
will April 25, 1749, probated May 22, 1766. It lists his sons Peter,
George, Christian, and Casper. Also listed are daughters Catherine Stover,
Frankiena (Franzina) Rugh, Mary Hill, Anna Maria Cramer, and Anna Lena
      Merckel.
