In Journal of Rev Muhlenberg, III:672, 13 Jun 1785:
Rev Muhlenberg baptized a child of Christian Heffelfinger and Maria, the sponsors
were Jacob Bastian and Catharine (this Jacob? could be other Bastians in area)
Jacob Bastian: A native of Snyder County, PA, and soldier of the Rev. war, was an
early settler of Newberry. Owned the grist mill now in possession of Mr. Good. Here he operated a saw mill, a grist mill, and a carding mill. Also cultivated 300 acres of land
which passed into the possession of John H. Cowden. Mr. Bastian died at what is
now Nesbit. He m1 a Miss Hartley by whom he had Henry, George, John,
Frank, Jacob, Samuel, Rosanna (who m. John Sloan), Kate M. (who m. Peter Hacker)
and Hettie (who m. John Epley). Jacob m2 a Miss Verline towhom were born
Solomon, Betsy, and Peggy. Was one of the leading men of his day and gave the
land for the Newberry cemetery and was a pushing and enterprising citizen.
also... John Bastian: b. in Berks County, PA on Jul 4, 1797, son of Jacob Bastian, who
settled at Newberry, Lycoming County. (is this the same Jacob and was he in Berks at
one time?)
