... a son of John S. and Judith (Herb) Smith, the father being a mechanic in Haas
during all his mature years. He was a master at his trade of blacksmithing and was
able to design and make anything within the sphere of his business....
John S. Smith was a Republican in political preferences, and a member of the
Church of God. Daniel H. Smith is the eldest of ten children born to his parents,
the others being Charles, of Ashland, Pa.; William, in Eldred township; Felix,
deceased; John, a farmer in Eldred township; Mary, of Mount Carmel;
Catherine, deceased; Lizzie, of Tower City, Pa.; Sarah, wife of William Beisel
