- 1860 census, pg 450/#1166, Eldred, Catherine 28 (with grandparents)
My AuntSue [Knerr] remembers Catharina. She said that Catharine had told the
children that she was going to get a widow's pension and have lots of money
someday (after her husband died). The paper work shows that by the time the
government was done hassling her over some obvious clerical issues, she had
died and the check had to be returned.
There is some uncertainty if Joseph was a son ofDaniel W. Consider this
excerpt from Catharine (Maurer) Knarr's application for Civil War pension benefits:
On this 22, day of May AD 1917, personally appeared before me a Justice of the
Peace, in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oath, James M.
Knarr, age 45 years a resident of Pitman, RFD in the County of Schuylkill and State
of Pennsylvania, a Son of above named claimant, who saith that his mother the said
Catharine Knarr, is now absent minded and not able to follow and attend to her
business, he therefore in her stead offers in evidance the following:
We have found a record in the family Bible belonging to the Claimant's father, Daniel
W. Maurer, and in thatBible is recorded the names and the date of each child's
births of the said Daniel W. Maurer,
Catharine Maurer, now the claimant born March 12, 1832.
Mary Maurer, Born February 23, 1834.
Anjalina Maurer, Born January 11, 1836,
Frank Maurer, Born Novemeber 28, 1838,
Hannah Maurer, Born October 22, 1841.
Magdalena and Aron Maurer, Twins, and were born in the year 1844.
In this record are no erasure nor alterations.
This record is a reliable one, being it is made in the family bible of the father of the
claimant, as it was the custom in prior generations to keep family records in Bibles.
The said claimant Catharine Knarr, was during the years 1850, and 1860, living
with her Grand-fatherJacob Maurer, in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, Penna,
at the place now called Pitman, so to me stated.
The claimants parents Daniel W. Maurer and Elizabeth Maurer, lived during the
years 1850 and 1860 in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, Penna., at the place
now called Pitman.,
All the above namedchildren of said Daniel W, Maurer, and Elizabeth Maurer,
lived during the years 1850 and 1860, except Magdalena Maurer,
The said James M. Knarr, is well known to be reuputable and entitled to credit,
and who being duly sworn, to the best of his knowledge that the facts aforesaid
in relation as stated are correct and true; and further declares that I have not personal
interest. signed "James M. Knerr" and it looks like it was overwritten with "Knarr".
