On This Day in Yoder History:
March 10, 1672-- On This Day in Yoder History- Hans Yoder (OH) was born in
Steffisburg in 1672.
Jan.27, 1708, Anna Regina, daughter of Hans Joder (OH) and his wife
Phronica (Veronica) Iselmyn was baptized at the Schwetzingen Reformed
Church. Jacob Korner, schoolmaster, and his wife Rachel were her
sponsors. Not long thereafter, Hans and family started on their journey
toward Pennsylvania (see article by Dr. Don Yoder in YNL5).
In the Schwetzingen Reformed Church register(on deposit with the Baden
Church Archives in Karlsruhle) the following is annotatedon the
baptismal record for Anna Regina , daughter of Hans Yoder (OH) and his
wife: "this family went to the Island of Pennsylvania, March 1, 1709"
Jan.14, 1711- Hans Joder (OH), a progenitor of the Oley Valley Yoder line
andbelieved as the first of our name in the New World, purchased land in
Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa...somewhere opposite the presentday
city of Pottstown. (see YNL5).
April 30, 1711- Oley immigrant Hans Yoder married Anna Rosina LeDee in a service
performed by Paulus van Vlecq at the Whitemarsh Church,
March 25, 1714 Hans Yoder (OH) received his warrent from William penn for
land along the Upper Manatawny Creek in the Oley Valley. This included
most of the land around what is now called Pleasantville... (see YNL5)
March 10, 1735, On this day in 1735, he (OH) sold land in Berks County,
Pa. to his son John (OH1).
On Jan.14, 1742- The will of Hans and his brother Yost were both "proved"
in Philadelphia. Apparently the executors of both estates made a joint
trip to the courthouse for this purpose.
A "curious German deed" dated Jan.31, 1771 at Neustadt in the German
Palatinate was found by Dr. Don Yoder on his first visit to the Berks
County Courthouse. In it, Johannas Jotter, eldest son of Nicholas Jotter,
a brother of Oley immigrants Hans and Yost, transferred his rights to
some land in Pennsylvania to his first cousin John Yoder Jr.
See Oley Valley Heritage, The Colonial Years: 1700-1775. It has pictures
of the Yoder homes and discusses Hans Yoder being part of the religious
movement called "The New Born", led by Matthias Baumann. It would seem
to explain the absence of the early Yoders from the records of nearby Lutheran
and Reformed records.
From History of Northumberland County, pg 566:
The first of the Yoder (sometimes spelled Yodder and Yotter in the
German) name in America were Yost and Hans (or Hance), brothers, who
sought refuge in England from the religious persecutions suffered in
their native Switzerland. They brought little with them to America
besides their Bible. Upon their arrival in the New World they pushed on
into the wilderness beyond Oley hills, and finally settled on the
Manatawny.
*snip info on Yost Yoder*
Hans (or Hance) Yoder, the emigrant brother of Yost, was the
builder and owner of what is now known as Griesemer's mills (burned in
1847, and rebuilt the same year). This property in the early days was
the homestead of the Yoders of Oley. The survey of theplantation under
proprietary warrant to Hance Yoder was returned March 25, 1714.
At that time Oley township was
the haunt of Indians, and of wolves, bear and other wild game. The
wives of the German settlers also bore their part in the subjugation of
the wilderness. One day while at work, extending their clearing in the
forest, they having shut their children in the cabin as a protection
from the beasts which roamed over their land, they were suddenly aroused
by the report of a rifle in the direction of their cabin. As it was
not unusual for predatory bands of bloodthirsty IroquoiJohannes married Fronica ISELMYN Bef 1700. Fronica was born Abt 1672, Europe; died Abt 1710. [Group Sheet]
