I believe that her mother was Catherine (McDevitt) Blanck. Now to make matters even
more murky, the death certificate of Mary E. Deal (who I refer to as Aunt Maisie)
born 5-21-1888, died 10-8-70, shows her mother's maiden name to beMary McDevitt
and her father to be Samuel Blanck. By the way, I have pictures of Aunt Maisie
and the last one shows her cutting a birthday cake with a caption indicating this
was her 80th birthday with a date that corresponds to heractual birthday we have
    on record.

    Maureen,
I have now located a death certificate of a definiterelative whose birth name was
Catherine E. McDevitt with a dob of 4-5-1867. Her parents were John McDevitt and
Susan (Doyle). According to the info on the death cert, both parent(s) and daughter
    were from Ireland.

She lived and died in Philadelphia. Does any of this sound familiar?

    **
I have been searching for my gf's family (McDevitt) and found that I have a relative
whose birth name was Blanck and her mother's name was McDevitt. What is
interesting is that her death cert. lists Samuel Blanck as her father. They lived in
Philadelphia and she was married to John Deal. Her name was Mary E. Deal born
    5-21-1888.

What is even more interesting is that I have the death cert of Catherine Blanck
born 4-5-1867. Her parents are listed as McDevitt. She passed away in 1938and
is buried in my gf's family plot. At the time of her death she was livingat 2637
Gerrit St. in Phila. and in the 1920 census was listed as the mother-in-law to
John Deal living with his wife Mary E. Deal.
Does any of this help you and can you help me?

    another child George?

"My father once said that my gf and he may have meant my ggf was a member
of the "MollyMcGuires". I presume you are aware of this reference. That would
have put the family in the coal fields and this may just have been some lore.

I also remember someone saying that my gf had a sister who became a nun
and that therewere brothers. They of course came from Ireland and I am
guessing probably the Donegal area since that is where most of the
    McDevitt's originated."

John McDevitt, and Susana McDevitt, on ship Washington, 17 Jul 1865
cabin passengers (John - from U.S., Susana - from England?), to New York
(does that mean that John had already been to U.S.?)
(U.S. = the country to which they severallybelong)

Still wondering if this is them - it seems there were ships going directly
to Philadelphia at this time, but the lists are not online.

Note - the ship list says ... City of Washington, date 17 Jul 1865, but
there was also an SS City of Washington, 6 Jun 1865, same master,
but different tonage and the date is too close. Not sure what this means?
This was the 1618 ton ship, other was 2386 ton.
This is "British Steamer" and other is "SS" ??
