Maybe Samuel married Maria Patterson first, then he married Maria's sister Catharine?
Since I didn't see the original record, maybe the marriage isn't really to "Maria"?

    East Salem Presbyterian

    Note:

The information for Sarah Ann Vanhorn's lineage wascompiled by my
Dad's Uncle Bill (I think). I haven't found any problems withwhat he
had (going back to the name Isaac Van Horn). He had lots of birth
dates for the John VanHorn generation and on. It appears by the fact
that he had so many dates that perhaps he had found a family Bible? I
don't know his sources, but the census records seem to show his
    conclusions reasonable.

    I had dates of 30 Jun 1816-3 Oct 1872
    Internet (cemetery) has 21 Jun 1816-4 Oct 1872 (76-3-13)

Note, the first two children, John and Sarah appear to be named after Thomas's parents.

Were Nathan and Emma named after Margaret's? No...(they were her siblings)

Thomas married Margaret HELLINGS Abt 1839, Bucks Co, PA. Margaret (daughter of Tunis HELLINGS and Rachel BRELSFORD) was born 22 Sep 1808, Middletown Twp, Bucks Co, PA; died 6 Dec 1866, East Salem, Delaware Twp, Juniata Co, PA; was buried East Salem Presbyterian Church, East Salem, Delaware Twp, Juniata Co, PA. dates from tombstone according to internet records:

the will of Rachel Hellings, widow of Teunis mentions:
"To my Daughter Margaret who married Thomas Vanhorn to have one tenth
part of the real and Personal Estate only the life Right and at her Death
to be given to her Daughter Mary Ann Hellings".

(was Mary Ann the right name? or was this a daughter before being married to Thomas?)
(or a daughter who died young?)
(or Ann Ettinger who showed up in 1850?)

Other records confirm Rachel Helling's mention of the out-of-wedlock
children of her kids. Don't know who was the father of Mary Ann, but the
"spouse" I have listed as DontKnow was not really married to Margaret in 1838.

in OC #6937 of 16 Feb 1853, estate of Rachel Hellings, heir Margaret
Vanhorn of Walker Twp, Juniatta Co petitions for settlement of estate.

    Notes:

There's nothing to tie Clement to the other Patterson family at Trinity Lutheran
(other than proximity and common surname).

Well, other things to consider - the other Pattersons are at a German Lutheran
Church. They have German names like "Johannes".

    1) It seems that Anna and Catharine Patterson, and mother, Widow Margaretha,
are all together at Trinity Lutheran and closely related. Anna seems oldest
and is the first one in the Trinity Records - 1784. Annamarries an English
    man, Catharine, a German one.

    2) Johannes is there. Hewas married at a different church and doesn't
want to attend at Trinity. No connections of him to anyone else.

    3) Clement shows up in 1794 at his marriage to a German girl.

    Nickname: Mary

    in church listings in 1785

baptized as Maria Helena, but I believe this is aka Maria Magdalena
    single in church book, 1789

single sp -> 1788, Joseph Weber and wf Catharine (Maria Magd Weberin,w/John Kurz)

1800 census, Mary, Lancaster, 00002-0, pg 120 ?? no, Clemens was alive then

    Notes:

John is listed as a son of Isaac in Marvin's book and also Robert's
Annals ofMontgomery County. I haven't seen anything to contradict
that other than possibly the fact that John seems to show up both
in Juniata County, PA and Ohio in 1860 (!).

1860 census, (near end), Walker Twp, Juniata Co, (w/son Thomas), age 64, -/$1000, John Vanhorn, gentleman

But who is John Vanhorn, 64, living with brother Charles Vanhorn in Hancock Co,
OH in 1860? counted twice? why be a gentleman in PA and farm laborer in OH
    at same time?)
    OH census 9 Jun 1860 (age 64)
