From the "Putnam County Sentinel" - Ottawa, Putnam Co., OH - Friday, April 12, 1918.

"MR. GEORGE SCHMIDT - NINETY YEARS OF AGE, BURNS TO DEATH IN HOME
    NEAR LEIPSIC

On Wednesday evening, April 10 about nine o'clock, the home of George
Schmidt, on the Gore's road northeast of Leipsic Junction, was discovered on
fire. Thebuilding was of frame construction and finished with plastering
boards and paper, causing the fire to spread with great rapidity. Mr.
Orville Young, a mail carrier of Leipsic, was the first to discover the fire
and arrive on the scene. Through the flames the gathering neighbors could
see Mr. Schmidt sitting in a rocking chair in the front room. But the flames
were already bursting through the doors and windows and it was impossible for
any human being to approach the burning building, let alone to enter and
attempt the rescue of Schmidt. Friends and neighbors were compelled to stand
helplessly by while the flames in savage cruelty reduced the aged man to ashes.

Mr. Schmidt, though 90 years of age, was still engaged in purchasing eggs
and poultry from the farmers, and was out on Wednesday as usual. Returning
home Wednesday evening, he unhitched his horse and putting the halter over
the bridle tied him in the stable and retired to the house. The theory of
his friends is that he had suffered a stroke of paralysis, or being chilled
by the cold winds of Wednesday and was resting and warming by the fire when
the warmth of the fire kindled in the stove brought on restful sleep, and
that he did not awaken as the stove became hotenough to set fire to the
building. He apparently had answered the last callas the fire raged, for at
no time was he noticed to make any move or struggle.

Mr. Schmidt leaves a son, Felix, who runs a drug store at Hamler, and a
daughter, Mrs. Phillip Wise, residing near Leipsic.
His children, friends and the community are shocked by the tragedy which
brought a soul home to its last resting place."

    1850 note:
(I don't believe that is the right JohnSmith family. Certainly the child listing does
not match this John and Magdalena at all (wrong names/ages), but also the
neighbors appear to be folks down in western U. Mahantongo Twp.
Perhaps John was off with family in Ohio since his father just died??)

Also - I looked at the original census (not just the abstract), to see if there was some
chance that the children's names were on adifferent page, or some other confusion,
and it looks like there was just another family in the area. Note that this person is
a laborer, while the John I'm looking for was a house builder, and farmer with his own land.

... The paternal grandfather of Daniel H. Smith was also named John Smith and was
among the pioneer carpenters and boat builders of Pottsville. He located in Eldred
township in an early day and both he and his son John S. were identified with the
development of that township, contributing their share toward its material growth and
prosperity. They owned farms which they tilled in connection with their mechanical
    work.

the copy of the above estate record shows that at some point, paper work was begun
to complete the estate. It looks like a "release" form, but was never signed by
everyone and for some reason was never completed and filed in the county courthouse.

    Notes:

I'm not sure if the tombstone at Zion is really this Magdalena or if it was his only wife.
Or this is the Magdalena, wife of John Smith in the 1850 census that is clearly a
different family? Everyone seems to assume that the one at Zion is this one.
But why was she buried at a different church? Could it be that the Magdalena,
d/o of Philip baptized in Greenwich Twp isn't this one (I think it is).

is this really the Magdalena Schmidt, wife of Johannes, buried at Zion, Pitman:
    2 Dec 1803 - 24 Dec 1851? From my picture:

Note - she definitely had died by the time the estate records came up in 1858. Had
she left John and been living in Barry Twp maybe (since many kids got married
there). I've tried to find John in the 1850census but can't find them anywhere.

tombstone says died 1849, age 75.

despite the slight difference in birth dates between the baptism and tombstone for
John Smith (which tombstone doesn't exist now), I think Melchior is the likely father.
    Consider:

    - the county history describes John Smith as being an early boat builder and carpenter
in Pottsville (which was part of Norwegian Twp originally).
    - there was aMelchior Smith in Norwegian Twp in 1830 (census).
    - a Henry Smith appears in nearby Barry Twp at that time. This Henry later appears
in Van Wert Co, OH. County histories there talk about them going from PA to Stark Co
and then to Van Wert. Henry's wife and Melchior and Dorothy are all buried together
    (no stone for Henry).
    - a letter exists from Jesse Smith to brother John Smith (in possession of a decendent
of John) mentioning "Henry" who is out in Ohio with him and appears to be a brother.
Jesse also mentions going back to "see the place" in Pottsville one more time.
    - a marriage record appears for Jesse Smith and Nancy in Stark County (matching the
names in the 1850 census of Van Wert and the location of Henry Smith, as if they all
moved together to Startk Co and then Van Wert).
    - Melchior Smith and Dorothea have several children baptized in the Reading area,
including a John (at the time this one would have been born) and a Joseway (Jesse?).
There is a gap in known baptisms where Henry's birth would fit. Also, the sponsor of a
Catharine Smith to Henry in 1831 would fit the Catharine d/o Melchior.
    - In summary, it appears that Melchior was the father of all these people and that
he moved to Ohio, leaving at least John behind (or maybe John went and came back).
It's still not clear where some of theSmiths mentioned in Jesse's letter fit in (ie, John
    and Daniel's kids).

Note: I wonder if the marriage at Trinity, Nicholas Schmidt to Dorothea Schmidtin
on 12 May 1799 could be a typo - maybe it's really Melchior?? There is no Nicholas in
any other church records of this time or the 1800 census. was it s/o Nicholas?

Chronology of Peter and Melchior Smith (likely brothers):
Petermarries Sophia Bapp in 1793 in Alsace Twp
Melchior shows up by 1794. Seems to also befriend the Papp family
Melchior married by 1800 it seems

note - a John Smith, estate of 1845, Ohio, recorded in Berks County.

Melchior married Dorothy UNKNOWN Between 1797 and 1802, Berks Co, PA. Dorothy (daughter of Johannes SCHMIDT and Maria Magdalena UNKNOWN) was born 19 Jun 1778, PA; died 27 Sep 1848, Tully Twp, Van Wert Co, OH; was buried Sugar Ridge Cemetery, Tully Twp, Van Wert Co, OH. [Group Sheet]
