He was supposed to be a policeman, according to Dad. Dad heard this as a kid,
but there seems to be no other source to confirmthis. I may have been overly
restrictive in my search by focusing on the policeman stuff.
I'm not convinced that Susan McDevitt is the mother.
5/04 - no, I think this is OK.
1) there's no reason to think that the baptism that Anna had was wrong. For
the Catholic Church to have given her the wrong information meant there
John Henderson and Susan had a daugther Anna at the same time, Susan
died, and "another" Anna Henderson disappears from the records or becomes
an orphan after 1898
2) Anna talked with her brothers who would have been old enough to know her
parents and confirm or deny her parents' names. Anna refered to her being
Irish because of the McDevitt connection to other people.
Problem - 5/04. Now that I have John N Henderson marrying Susan McDevitt
in 1893, how could they have both been the parents of John Henderson
and James Henderson? Or were they really half brother (and John
lied about not being married before on his marriage license). Or maybe
they had lived together first? Or were married, but not in a Catholic Church?
Solution - 6/04. Got files from Children's Aid Society. Pages on John,
Nannie, and Susan (later Mary) show... Mother was in Home for Consumptives.
Father was "worthless". Grandmother "Susan McDevitt" came to check on them.
They tried to find the father, who was known to hang out at a saloon, but never
found him. Last attempt was 1904 before Nannie was adopted by Shaughnessy
family. But it puts to rest whether John N Henderson and Susan McDevitt
were the parents. It would seem thatJohn and Susan were to be the parents
of John as well, although clearly John was born before they were married.
(or they had been married before outside the Catholic Church).
Problem - what happened to James Henderson? I removed him for now. I
think there was confusion about "John and James" and it was thesons of
John Sr. - 7/14/05

Notes:
given that the marriage of Mary A. Henderson says mother was named "Mary",
I wonder if this is the right mother's name.
Note - Mary listed her mother as Mary and it wasn't until a letter came back
from a church in Philadelphia thatthe mother of "Anna" Henderson was
listed as Susan (McDevitt).
Still, I'm starting to rethink this. It would seem that Anna had talked with
her brothers on several occasions, who would have been old enough
to remember what her parent's name was. I doubt she would have kept
refering to John and Susan if she found out later these weren't her parents.
It would just seem that up until her 20's, she (and her sister) didn't
know anything about her parents with anycertainty (except perhaps
that her father was John Henderson).

Notes:
Since the children were born in 1862 and 1866, it's possible that Mix was
serving in the Civil War during the middle years.
Looking for someone named Mixthat would have lived near to the Henderson
household. Elizabeth was living at home in 1860 and 1870 census. When
John Newton Henderson got married, he wrote that he was born in Philadelphia,
though not positive if we would have known that accurately.
The problem is that there doesn't seem to be any Mix boys listed in the 1861
and 1862 directories living anywhere nearby. The other issue is that the
father should be around in 1866 also (when I don't have an online city
directory). Maybe it's really a varient name like Meeks, Micks, etc?
Or did Elizabeth just make up "Mix", as in her first kids were a "Mix" of
fathers? Sounds mean, but checking everything.
Mary E Mix used the surname Mix when she was married.
in 1870 census, she's listed as Mix
in 1880 census, she's listed as Johnson (step-father's name)
in 1885 marriage, she's a Mix
in 1900 census, she had father was born in PA
in 1910 census, she had father was born in USA (as if she wasn't sure)
in 1920 census, she had father was born in PA
John N only shows up as a Mix in 1870 census. He seems to have switched
over to Henderson sometime around 1880-1885.

didthey just separate? divorce?

have put the family in the coal fields and this may just have been some lore.
I also remember someone saying that my gf had a sister who became a nun

guessing probably the Donegal area since that is where most of the
McDevitt's originated."
