    Peter Yoder, son of Anthony, was born in 1827 and died May 16, 1868, in
    Upper Mahanoy township, Northumberland county. He lived in the Mahantango Valley
    for many years, and was a stonemason by occupation. He married Harriet Klock,
    who after his death became the wife of Sebastian Zimmerman, Mr. and Mrs.
    Zimmerman being now residents of Sunbury, this county. To Peter and Harriet
    (Klock) Yoder were born these children: Mary F. died young; Lewis K. is
    mentioned below; Emma married Joel Hepler, who is deceased; Julia married
    (first) Benjamin Fertig and (second) John Singmeister; Christiana married
    George Bennett; William H. died young; Peter is living at Scranton,
    Pennsylvania.

    also
    Mr. Zimmerman's second marriage was to Mrs. Harriet (Klock) Yoder, born
    Feb. 18, 1832, daughter of Jacob and Polly (Masser) Klock, and to this union
    there are two children: Alice, born Feb.13, 1874, and Clara, born Dec. 13,
    1875. By her first marriage, to Peter Yoder, son of Anthony Yoder, of
    Schuylkill county and later of Northumberland county, Mrs. Zimmerman had six
    children: Sarah (deceased), Lewis, Emma, Juliann, Christian and Peter.

    Peter married Harriet KLOCK Abt 1853, Eldred Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. Harriet (daughter of Jacob KLOCK and Polly MASSER) was born 18 Feb 1832; died 11 Jun 1912, Northumberland Co, PA; was buried Eden Church, Rockefeller Twp, Northumberland Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

    sp - 1829 John Fassler and wf [Elisabeth] (on my Harrison Yoder taufschein)

    I have a Taufschein for the son Harrison Yoder that mentions the parents as
    Anthony Jotter and Sarah Howerder. Also, Floyd's History of Northumberland County
    mentions Anthony Yoder and his wife and children.

    History of Northumberland County, pg 567, mentions children:
    Anthony Yoder, great-grandfather of Webster H. Yoder, lived in the
    Mahantango Valley in Schuylkill county, where he followed farming. His wife was
    Sarah Howerter, and they are buried at the Howerter church in that valley. They
    had children as follows:
    Polly died unmarried;
    Elizabeth married George Moyer;
    Judith married Samuel Neiswender;
    Susan married Daniel Wetzel;
    Eva married Daniel Stitzer;
    Kate married Henry Hoffman;
    Sybilla married Jacob Zimmerman;
    Sarah married Jonas Coppenhafer;
    Peter is mentioned below;
    Harrison and Reuben died inSchuylkill county.

    Orphan's Court accounting 1:378 1/2 handles Anthony's estate. Mentions administrators
    Peter Yoder and Daniel Haerner. Also mentions Harrison Yoder,
    Mr Nishwender and Eve Yoder. 30 Dec 1853.

    Anthony signs on pg 352, OC "Anthonÿ Joder"

    Anthony married Sarah HOWERTER Abt 1811, Upper Mahantongo Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. Sarah (daughter of Johan Adam HOWERTER and Catharine KROHN) was born Abt 1793, Longswamp Twp, Berks Co, PA; died Abt 1851, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA; was buried Howerter's Church, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Sarah HOWERTER was born Abt 1793, Longswamp Twp, Berks Co, PA (daughter of Johan Adam HOWERTER and Catharine KROHN); died Abt 1851, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA; was buried Howerter's Church, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA.

    Other Events:

    • Confirmation: 24 Apr 1808, Howerter's Luth Church, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA
    • _UID: E1FD70AA20484EDDAE7D0D7CC5DFA6D45D74

    Notes:

    1850 census has Sarah age 56, (born circa 1794). The other ages for the family
    seem correct, but I'd guess Sarah could be born any time c1791-95 and still be
    pretty consistent. Confirmation in 1808 at typical age of 15 would push her
    birth back to 1793.

    her parents listed as Adam, Sr. is a "best fit". That is, despite my continued look for
    alternatives, I don't have any evidence that she isn't a daughter of Adam Sr, and several
    reasons why she is. Consider:

    - Sarah is identified as a Howerter on Harrison Yoder's Taufschein (original in my possession).
    - Sarah is identified as a Howerter in Floyd's book on Northumberland Co (Re: Anthony Yoder)
    - only males Adam Sr, Adam Jr, and Peter came to Howerter's Church area.
    - Sarah Howerter was confirmed here in 1808.
    - Sarah Howerter and Adam Howerter are listed together as communicants at
    Howerters on 3 May 1812 (no other Howerter's there)
    - Adam Jr "had no children" according to Floyd book (but see 1810 Census)
    - 1800 census seems goofed up for Adam Jr (00001-00120). (but no young daughter)
    - 1800 census for Adam Sr matches: 10101-11101 - children being Johannes (if alive),
    Christina, Anna Maria, and Sarah.
    - 1810 census for Adam Sr: 00001-01001 (Jr: 11010-01010?)
    - Peter'skids are accounted for and start in 1805. wf born in 1778.
    - Sarah's parents would be 52/46 which is a little old, but still OK.
    - So Adam Sr is only viable candidate for her father.
    - Sarah appears as a sponser to "sister" Catharine/Anthony Wehry in 1811.
    - There doesn't appear to be any indication that she could be an illegitimate
    daughter of one of Adam's other daughters...

    Problems with this theory:
    - She's not mentioned as a daughter in Floyd's book (but neither is daughter Salome).
    Given the accuracy of the rest of the article, that's not a big deal
    - The mother Catharine is pretty old (not too old) for a child in 1794
    - Normally Sarah and Salome were the same name (one the nickname of the other)
    so it's odd for someone to have daughters with both names (though not *too* odd
    to me). This is the only one that really bothers me.

    Her death is based on the fact that she's in the 1850 census, but not in Anthony's will.

    On the unwed mother theory: The mother would have to have
    been Catharine, Salome or Elisabeth. This is my second best guess. Certainly, it
    seems Adam Sr raised her, but maybe she was born out of wedlock. If I
    were to pick a candidate for that, it would be Elisabeth who would have
    been just old enough at the time. Elisabeth *maybe* married John Fassler
    who later were sponsors for the baptims of Harrison Yoder.

    +Could it be Catharine? I doubt it since Sarah was a sponsor to her in 1811. I can't
    imagine having the abandoned child being a sponsor for her mother later on.
    +Could it be Salome? I doubt it. Salome seems to have been married to
    Jonathan Bastress at that time and there are estate records showing that the
    only daughter by that father was Catharineborn c1794.
    The only thing would be if for some reason (!), the daughter Catharine was raised
    by Adam Sr and "renamed" Sarah (ie Salome). The age would atleast be right.
    +Could it be Elisabeth? Well, Elisabeth would be just old enough to have gotten
    pregnant. But I can't figure out what happened to her. Ithink Elisabeth would have
    to be the most likely of the daughters. She was apparently alive when Adam Sr made
    his will. a Guess then would be that Elisabeth married John Fassler later (and was
    a sponsor to Anthony Yoder and Sarah when Harrison was born).

    How about this possibility - Sarah (maybe a Salome) was born to someone else, and
    raised as a Howerter? Possibilities:

    Salome Knappenberger, born 7 Feb 1793, to John A. (Adam) Knappenberger
    (note - Adam Sr's first sponsor was a Knappenberger).

    a child of Adam Jr (by a first wife who died in child birth?)

    Note: Floyd's History of Northumberland County mentions children:
    3 daughters married brothers named Wary
    one married a Spiece
    one married a DeTurk
    one of the Wary's is buried at Mahanoy and one at Herb's Church.
    (says the ancestor was a Hession soldier - nah!)
    (note: missing Sarah Yoder and Salome Bastress Walp)

    I found notes at the Lehigh County HistoricalSociety and also Northumberland County
    Historical Society showing other Howerter researchers uncovered Sarah Howerter
    as another daughter of Adam. (see myother notes under her name).

    Adam's will mentions "all my children" withoutnames. Also "Elizabeth or her children
    shall have her share and that shall also be divided amongst them in equal shares.
    she has yet to receive $28.0.6 till she has received one hundred Pounds" Not sure
    what that means - was she sick and dying? Also mentions sons Adam and Peter.

    The tombstone says born inChester County. There's no reason to think that it's
    false since the Trappe Church is across the river from Chester County.

    The text of the article in Floyd's History of Northumberland County, pg 846:
    HOWERTER. Adam Howerter, the first known ancestor of a family numerously
    represented in Berks and Northumberland counties, Pa., was born Sept. 2, 1742,
    and died in what is now Upper Mahanoy township, Northumberland Co., Pa., near
    Howerters Church, Dec. 6, 1819. The inscription on his tombstone says "born in
    Chester county," but family tradition has it that he was one of the Hessian
    soldiers brought here by the English government during the Revolutionary war,
    after which he settled in Chester county, Pa. About 1786 he located in Longswamp
    township, Berks county, where in 1790 the Federal Census Report records him as
    the head of a family of three sons and four daughters. The eldest son, Henry,
    was already married in that year, but at that time had no children. He is said
    to have remained in Berkscounty, but Adam and his other children, sons Johan
    Adam and Johan Peter and four daughters, came to the Mahantango Valley, settling
    in that district now embraced in Upper Mahanoy township, where the father took
    up a large tract of land, some of which he cleared, erecting the first set of
    buildings thereon.

    He and his wife Catharine, who according to the tombstone
    inscription was born in Europe Dec. 28, 1748, and died April 23, 1819

    Johan married Catharine KROHN 30 Apr 1767, Christ (Mertz) Church, Rockland Twp, Berks Co, PA. Catharine was born 23 Dec 1748, Europe; died 23 Apr 1819, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA; was buried Howerter's Church, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

    ALSO NOTE: a book on the Howerter family at the Northumberland Co Historical
    Society speculates that Catharine is a daughter of Peter Long of Colebrookdale
    (or another Long)

    the Palatine Immigrant group's newsletter, March 2000, pg 72, shows Catharine
    as a daugther of Martin Krohn. I've seen this several times. It seemsto rely on the
    idea that folks were wrong about Catharine being born in Europe, that the family
    broke up early, and Catharine was one of the kids. Still, I've seen no direct evidance
    or even an indirect link between this Catharine and any other Krohn member.
