    1850 note:
(I don't believe that is the right JohnSmith family. Certainly the child listing does
not match this John and Magdalena at all (wrong names/ages), but also the
neighbors appear to be folks down in western U. Mahantongo Twp.
Perhaps John was off with family in Ohio since his father just died??)

Also - I looked at the original census (not just the abstract), to see if there was some
chance that the children's names were on adifferent page, or some other confusion,
and it looks like there was just another family in the area. Note that this person is
a laborer, while the John I'm looking for was a house builder, and farmer with his own land.

    admin 5:387 (to Daniel Smith)

... The paternal grandfather of Daniel H. Smith was also named John Smith and was
among the pioneer carpenters and boat builders of Pottsville. He located in Eldred
township in an early day and both he and his son John S. were identified with the
development of that township, contributing their share toward its material growth and
prosperity. They owned farms which they tilled in connection with their mechanical
    work.

    a settlement for John's estate:

the copy of the above estate record shows that at some point, paper work was begun
to complete the estate. It looks like a "release" form, but was never signed by
everyone and for some reason was never completed and filed in the county courthouse.

Note discrepancy with tombstone. 11 Nov 1802 in baptism,
11 Dec 1803 from supposed tombstone reading (source Dr. Meiser)
(not sure if stone had birth date or age listed) I checked at the church
several times and the stoneis not standing (at Church of God).

Johannes married Magdalena SCHNEIDER Bef 1826, Upper Mahantongo Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. Magdalena (daughter of Philip SCHNEIDER and Maria UNKNOWN) was born 1 Sep 1801, Greenwich Twp, Berks Co, PA; died Between 1840 and 1858, Eldred Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Magdalena SCHNEIDER was born 1 Sep 1801, Greenwich Twp, Berks Co, PA (daughter of Philip SCHNEIDER and Maria UNKNOWN); died Between 1840 and 1858, Eldred Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA.

    • Baptism: 15 Nov 1801, Zion (Moselem) Church, Richmond Twp, Berks Co, PA
    • Confirmation: 1817, Howerter's Luth Church, Upper Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA
    • _UID: 095F035ED6994C8599B157E1AE9CAA159454

    Notes:

I'm not sure if the tombstone at Zion is really this Magdalena or if it was his only wife.
Or this is the Magdalena, wife of John Smith in the 1850 census that is clearly a
different family? Everyone seems to assume that the one at Zion is this one.
But why was she buried at a different church? Could it be that the Magdalena,
d/o of Philip baptized in Greenwich Twp isn't this one (I think it is).

is this really the Magdalena Schmidt, wife of Johannes, buried at Zion, Pitman:
    2 Dec 1803 - 24 Dec 1851? From my picture:

    Johannes Schmidt

    Dec 2(4?) Dec 1854
    52 years, 22 days

(most is still hard to read)

Note - she definitely had died by the time the estate records came up in 1858. Had
she left John and been living in Barry Twp maybe (since many kids got married
there). I've tried to find John in the 1850census but can't find them anywhere.

    Notes:

*NOTE: I'm not really sure that Melchior is the son of Nicholas Smith. That
is just a guess for now
*NOTE: OK, now I'm leaning toward being a son of a John and Magdalena
*NOTE: OK, now I'm leaning toward a son of John and Elisabeth
*NOTE: now I'm back to Nicholas
    * November 2000 - got will of Elisabeth, single d/o Nicholas and Eve. Mentions
her siblings Melchior and Frantz. Now I'm convinced this is the right family after all.

tombstone says died 1849, age 75.

despite the slight difference in birth dates between the baptism and tombstone for
John Smith (which tombstone doesn't exist now), I think Melchior is the likely father.
    Consider:

    - the county history describes John Smith as being an early boat builder and carpenter
in Pottsville (which was part of Norwegian Twp originally).
    - there was aMelchior Smith in Norwegian Twp in 1830 (census).
    - a Henry Smith appears in nearby Barry Twp at that time. This Henry later appears
in Van Wert Co, OH. County histories there talk about them going from PA to Stark Co
and then to Van Wert. Henry's wife and Melchior and Dorothy are all buried together
    (no stone for Henry).
    - a letter exists from Jesse Smith to brother John Smith (in possession of a decendent
of John) mentioning "Henry" who is out in Ohio with him and appears to be a brother.
Jesse also mentions going back to "see the place" in Pottsville one more time.
    - a marriage record appears for Jesse Smith and Nancy in Stark County (matching the
names in the 1850 census of Van Wert and the location of Henry Smith, as if they all
moved together to Startk Co and then Van Wert).
    - Melchior Smith and Dorothea have several children baptized in the Reading area,
including a John (at the time this one would have been born) and a Joseway (Jesse?).
There is a gap in known baptisms where Henry's birth would fit. Also, the sponsor of a
Catharine Smith to Henry in 1831 would fit the Catharine d/o Melchior.
    - In summary, it appears that Melchior was the father of all these people and that
he moved to Ohio, leaving at least John behind (or maybe John went and came back).
It's still not clear where some of theSmiths mentioned in Jesse's letter fit in (ie, John
    and Daniel's kids).

Note: I wonder if the marriage at Trinity, Nicholas Schmidt to Dorothea Schmidtin
on 12 May 1799 could be a typo - maybe it's really Melchior?? There is no Nicholas in
any other church records of this time or the 1800 census. was it s/o Nicholas?

Chronology of Peter and Melchior Smith (likely brothers):
Petermarries Sophia Bapp in 1793 in Alsace Twp
Melchior shows up by 1794. Seems to also befriend the Papp family
Melchior married by 1800 it seems

    - it appears that Philip disappears from Berks County at the time this one shows

based on the Howerter's records, I wonder if Charlotte might
be the widow of David Groh (who ironically marrieda Charlotte Herb

also, was Sophia the widow of Henrich Mertz?? she also disappears as
a wife of his at about the time Daniel has a wife named Sophia...

    Notes:

I had seen other speculative ID's of who Christina was. I tried following them up
but never found anything backing them up.

Daniel's wife being a Heymanis based on:

    - the fact that the marriage record actually says Heuman in the one version (pronounced
in German"hoyman", with the meaning heu=hay. Hence the later variations Heyman,
    Hayman, Heiman, Hoyman).
    - Philip Heyman lived in Rockland according to the 1790 census. That is were
Daniel's wife was to have been from according to the marriage record
    - the sponsorship of Daniel and wf (Christina) to Joseph Heuman and also to George Lang (who married a Heuman)
    - the fact that Philip had a daughter Christina at just the right time

For more info on the Heyman family, see "Some Notes, Quotes, and Quips of
the Hoyman Clan and Related Lines by David L. Baldwin of 1645A 13th St NW,
Washington,DC 20009. At the time of the book, David hadn't ironed out the
roots of the family in Berks County. But combining records and looking at baptismal
sponsors, etc, we pieced together a pretty good version of the first generation of
    kids in Berks County.

This is definitely the fatherof Elizabeth Klock who married Daniel Herb since
that adminstration of John'sestate was given to the son-in-law Daniel Herb.

I wonder who were the otherchildren of John Jr. The estate of Daniel Herb
Jr (see Schuylkill Deed 109:110) mentions children:
John Smith and Judith his wife
Gideon W. Snyder and Catharine K his wife
Daniel Neishwender and Rebecca his wife
Franklin K. Herb and Lydia Ann his wife
Charles K. Herb and Magdalena his wife [heir of Charles K desc I think]
    all of Schuylkill Co
and Isaac Snyder of Northumberland Co and Elisabeth his wife
to Samuel K Herb of Schuylkill Co.

The deed goes on todescribe the John Klock land that falls to these people
(via Daniel Herb Jr) and says that the first party is selling their "six ninths" part.
So that means that with Samuel, that is only 7/9ths and there are two other
heirs to the land. I'm guessing they're the descendents of John Klock, Jr.
Possibly Peter F. Klock and John F. Klock??

Johannes married Maria Magdalena DUNKELBERGER Abt 1797, Upper Mahantongo Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA. Notes:

I'm still bothered by the fact that her birth date in the baptism is differentfrom
that on the tombstone. The tombstone has at St Pauls has died 15 Aug 1855,
age 77-3-3, which works out to 12 May 1778 instead of 12 Feb 1777. At least
the "12" is right, and I could take being off a year, but with the month, too, I always
have a little doubt. Still, the baptism sponsorships strongly suggest the Dunkelberger
relation. Also, someone doing the math wrong may be explainable.

A possible sceneraio is that Magdalena, who was absent in the 1850 census,
had moved up to Shamokin area with grandson Benjamin Klock. When she
died, he buried her locally and may have been off on her birth date.

4/12/00 - I found the account records for Magdalena Klock in the Northumberland
County courthouse. Isaac Snyder was the administrator (he was married to Magdalena's
granddaughter Elizabeth). Inventory was done 14 Mar 1856. Various dispersements
were made, but uncertain what happened to remainder. See Orphan's Court
    accounts 2:183

Will book 4:484, 15 Feb 1856 To Isaac Snyder (Letters of Admin I believe)
(Isaac is her grandson-in-law, she was probably living withthem at the time)
