where ishe buried? the death date matches that at West Side Cemetery.
Dr. Meiser seems to have the wrong birth year (1958!). If that were right,
he'd be born after he died. I think it's a copying error.

did have died in Snyder County. Source?

Description from military records: 5'6.5" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes,
    brown hair.

Married by Jacob Hepler, according to Civil War pension records

Pension application was once denied for "vicious habits" during the war. He
was treated for venereal disease during the Civil War.

Family story: Charles left his wife after getting his pension for approximately 20
years, then came back to his wife. He and his wife lived with different families
membersat different times. The story goes that they eventually got back
together. They sat together on the porch at James Knerr's house and made
up. Then they spent their last few years together, living in a small house that
was then builtfor them on the property (near the creek?).

Charles also was to have survived the war, but got shot in (outside?) a bar on
the way back from the Civil War. I also heard the shooter was a rebel. When
Charles was around later in life, he complained of his injury, and according to
relatives, he would have hisgrandson Jack Knerr pick out the BB's that came
to the surface with a knife (so it must have been a shotgun wound).

It's odd that his pension applicationmakes no reference to either a wound or a
disability because of it. Probablysince there was no record in his service record of
a real war time wound, it wouldn't have done any good bringing it up. But clearly,
everyone in the family seems to have known that Charles was shot in a bar related
    incident on the way back.

My Great Aunt Sue [Knerr] told me she had vague recollections of Charles. She
said the young boys would tease him but he'd say "you laugh, but people
    will remember me..."

Pension form of 1 Apr 1915 has this info:
married Catharine Maurer 15 Mar 1868, by Jacob M Hepler (later a copy of
certificate was made for pension file)

My AuntSue [Knerr] remembers Catharina. She said that Catharine had told the
children that she was going to get a widow's pension and have lots of money
someday (after her husband died). The paper work shows that by the time the
government was done hassling her over some obvious clerical issues, she had
died and the check had to be returned.

There is some uncertainty if Joseph was a son ofDaniel W. Consider this
excerpt from Catharine (Maurer) Knarr's application for Civil War pension benefits:

On this 22, day of May AD 1917, personally appeared before me a Justice of the
Peace, in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oath, James M.
Knarr, age 45 years a resident of Pitman, RFD in the County of Schuylkill and State
of Pennsylvania, a Son of above named claimant, who saith that his mother the said
Catharine Knarr, is now absent minded and not able to follow and attend to her
business, he therefore in her stead offers in evidance the following:

We have found a record in the family Bible belonging to the Claimant's father, Daniel
    W. Maurer, and in thatBible is recorded the names and the date of each child's
births of the said Daniel W. Maurer,

Catharine Maurer, now the claimant born March 12, 1832.
Mary Maurer, Born February 23, 1834.
Anjalina Maurer, Born January 11, 1836,
Frank Maurer, Born Novemeber 28, 1838,
Hannah Maurer, Born October 22, 1841.
Magdalena and Aron Maurer, Twins, and were born in the year 1844.

In this record are no erasure nor alterations.
This record is a reliable one, being it is made in the family bible of the father of the
claimant, as it was the custom in prior generations to keep family records in Bibles.

The said claimant Catharine Knarr, was during the years 1850, and 1860, living
with her Grand-fatherJacob Maurer, in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, Penna,
at the place now called Pitman, so to me stated.

The claimants parents Daniel W. Maurer and Elizabeth Maurer, lived during the
years 1850 and 1860 in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, Penna., at the place
    now called Pitman.,

All the above namedchildren of said Daniel W, Maurer, and Elizabeth Maurer,
lived during the years 1850 and 1860, except Magdalena Maurer,

The said James M. Knarr, is well known to be reuputable and entitled to credit,
and who being duly sworn, to the best of his knowledge that the facts aforesaid
in relation as stated are correct and true; and further declares that I have not personal
interest. signed "James M. Knerr" and it looks like it was overwritten with "Knarr".

    will of Daniel W 1882/1887mentions:
    - wf Elisabeth
    - c/o Aaron, viz George Frances, Daniel and Elisabeth

    will of Elisabeth mentions:
    - Ahron's kids
    - Catharine, w/o Charles Knarr
    - Hennah, w/o Emanuel Gheres
    - Frank (actually, his children)
? no mention of Angelina? upset that she married her first cousin?

Note - the middle initial 'W' was for Wehry

Note - census lists Joseph with Daniel Maurer and Elisabeth
but I wonder if he wasn't just raised by them. Elisabeth was 46 at
the time of Joseph's birth. He's not mentioned in the will of Elisabeth.
It doesn't have the family relationship shown in 1860 census.

also, he's not listed in Charles Knarr's pension application (which has
a list of Daniel W. Maurer's children pulled from a family bible).

Maybe he was a daughter of Catharine who would have been 21 at the time.
Or daughter of Maria Anna (who died unmarried)
Joseph Osman in 1870? in Lee Twp, Allegan Co, Michigan in 1900?
Joseph Maurer of Canal Twp, Venango Co in 1900?

    Notes:

estate of Conrad Hartlein mentions "widow"

Dr. Hartlein has a "Elizabeth Hartlein" 1758 - 6/10/1841, at Reeds Church
(same place as George, s/o Conrad).I wonder if the date 1758 is really on
it or if it's an age that was misread. There doesn't seem to be anyone that
fits that name and age in this family. My guess is it's really a stone for Elisabeth,
w/o Conrad, who came to live with George or Rebecca. Need to see stone
to prove (Elisabeth would have been 59 at the time of her death then).
Daughter Rebecca is also buried at Reeds.

What other Elizabeth Hartlein would be buried at Reeds? (Elisabeth, wife of
George Hartlein's grand-uncle Leonard Hartlein's wife?). Given that Conrad and
Elisabeth had just moved out to Snyder County when he died, it would seem
that Elisabeth would have more "support" back in eastern PA.

Or did she remarry and stay in Snyder Co?
