Retired PRR Employee dies
A marital union of more than 51 years was broken with the death of Simon Peter Conrad in his home, 416 Fairmount Ave, at 7:25 o'clock this morning. He had been bedfast for the past 6 months with complications. He was aged 78 years, one month and 5 days. He was born in Sunbury, September 1 1863, the son of the late Henry B and Mary Ann Conrad. The golden weddingof Mr and Mrs Conrad was celebrated by their family in August, 1940. Mrs. Conrad's maiden name was Margaret A. Knisely, and she was a native of Juniata Valley. Entering the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1883, Mr. Conrad was engaged for 45 years as a car repairman on the Williamsport Division, first in the Sunbury shops and late at Northumberland. He retired September 1, 1938, at the age of 65 years. He was for many years a member of the Catawissa Avenue United Methodist Church. He gave up other affiliations with advancing years. He is survived by his wife: one daughter Mrs James Linderman, of Jersey Shore; 3 sons, Robert E Conrad and Russel E Conrad of Sunbury, and William D Conrad of Wilmington DE; 3 sisters, Mrs William Welch of South 4th Street, Mrs William Neuer of North 4th Street, and Mrs Margaret Geiser of Philadelphia, PA; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchilden. His son Robert E Conrad is city controller and treasurer of Milton Jarrett Norman Post No 201, American Legion. He is the second member of the post to be bereaved by loss of his father within two days, the first being Joh Bayers. Fungeral services will be held from his home, 416 Fairmont Ave, Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Rev L.B. Barton, Pastor of the Catawissa Avenue United Methodist Church will officate. Burial will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery.

In the Conrad plot is a Parker Grub, 22 Nov 1890-8 Feb1891, buried 9 Feb at Pomfret Manor. Also recorded in Henry's Bible. Perhapsa child of daughter Margaret?? (her father dec'd and she was 19 years old). but Henry's will of 1895 calls her Margaret Conrad, and she's living at home then. That would also match the fact that a cousin thought Parker buried in the Conrad plot was "Aunt Maggy's child". Or perhaps an illigimate child of one ofthe sons??

Sneak thieves entered the kitchen of Henry B Conrad's residence,on 435 Fairmont Ave, East Sunbury, Tuesday night. They stole several coats, apair of shoes, cakes and a few other articles. Charles Barnhart's house on Reagon St was also entered the same night and a number of articles were carried off. It is thought that the same thieves committed both robberies.

Henry B. Conrad died at his late residence Sunday evening at 10:30 o'clock of a complication of diseases. He was aged 70 years, 7 months, and 21 days. The deceased was one of Sunbury's oldest citizens and commanded the respect and esteem of a large circle of friends who mourn with the bereaved family. The funeral will be held from the Reagon Street Lutheran Church, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. interment at Pomfret Manor Cemetery.

Mrs Mary Conrad, one of city's oldest residents, passes away

Death claimed one of Sunbury's oldest and most respected citizens,
when Mrs. Mary Conrad died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William
Neuer of 448 Court Street, Wednesday morning from a complication
of diseasesdue to old age. She was aged 85 years, 3 months, and 19 days,
and is surviedby the following children: Mrs. William Welch of South 4th Street;
Mrs. William Neuer of Sunbury; Simon Peter Conrad of Sunbury and William Conrad
of Waycross, Georgia. Many old friends will be deeply grieved to learn of her
demise.

The reasons for placing Henry here are:
- Henry fits here age wise (consider Peter's will to mention kids inage order)
- Henry died owning the same land described as given from Peter tohis son Henry
in Peter's will
- the 1830 census record for Henry, s/o Peter,match this Henry's family (while others don't)
- the 1820 census (Jr) probably refers to "Younger" in this case, not s/o Henry
- Henry the elder (s/o Jacob Conrath) had a son Henry born much later
- Henry doesn't fit in to the otherfamilies

So I have no doubt he is the son of Peter Conrad

Note how old Henry and Christina are when they are married. Perhaps she or both were marriedbefore? But the estate records don't seem to show any other decendents.

Probably a daughter also. At Stone Church "daughter of Henry Conrad, stillborn,
died/buried 18 aug 1827"

I still see a daughter Susanna showing up as a child of Henry. But she's not mentioned in the estate records, so I doubt that the Susannah from the 1850 census is a daughter of his. Especially the part where Susannah married Daniel Zartman. Daniel shows up in the estate records when Henry died, but as an unbiased neighbor when checking the property. If he was really a son-in-law, he wouldn't be unbiased and wouldn't be evaluating the land for his brothers-in-law. If he did marry Susannah, and she was a Conrad, shewasn't a daughter of Henry. - note - found Susanna Conrad w/o Daniel Zimmerman, buried at Lantz, 8/1/1817 - 6/6/1901 (still not a d/o of Henry in my opinion)

Note: a Samuel Kneisle and Maria Patterson, married 4-14-1813 at Trinity
Lutheran Church, Lancaster, PA!! (Maria Catharine??). What are the chances
that a differentSamuel Kneisle in the same area married a different Patterson girl?

Maybe Samuel married Maria Patterson first, then he married Maria's sister Catharine?
Since I didn't see the original record, maybe the marriage isn't really to "Maria"?

Note - there were Pattersons in Hempfield in 1790 (but can't find in 1800)

In Biographical Encyclopedia of Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juiata and Perry Counties,
pg 328-9:
REV. JOSEPH K. KNISELY, now of Flemington, Clinton county, Pa., was born on a
farm near Port Royal, Juniata county, Pal, February 8,, 1853. He is the son of
Abraham and Catharine (Kieffer) Knisely. His grandfather, Samuel Knisely, was born
in Lancaster county, 1791, removed to Juniata county,and married Catharine
Patterson, born in 1793. They resided in Juniata county, until their death; that of his
wife occuring in 1849, and his in 1864. His children were
John, a carpenter, who died at Lewistown, Pa., 1893;
Samuel, died in 1871, near Mexico, Juniata county, Pa.;
Elizabeth (Mrs. Kauffman), of Cedar Rapids, Iowa;
Abraham, father of Rev. Mr. Knisely;
Mrs. Mary Kauffman, who died in 1862;
Kate (Mrs. Ferner), died in 1858;
George, of Millerstown, Perry county, Pa.;
Jacob, who went to California in 1848, and is now a well-to-dofarmer near
Quincy, Cal.;
Joseph, a barge builder, of Allegheny City, Pa.;
Barbara (Mrs. Holman), of Mifflintown, Pa.;
William, of Mexico, Pa.

Two of these werein the war of the Rebellion,
George, who served eleven months in Company B, Two
Hundred and Second Pennsylvania Volunteers, and William, of the Forty-ninth
Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Deed book 24, pg 81, Samuel Knisely and wf Catharine sold land to
Amos H. Slaymaker, a lot in Columbia, W. Hempfield, 7/9/1821. Was
purchased 2/10/1815 from Jacob Strickler.

Samuel Kneisly andwf Catharine sold land to Christian Kauffman, Book O-7, pg 120,
3/8/1825, East Hempfield Twp. $1400 for 3 lots, No 3 for 11 acres, no 8 for 6 acres,
adjoining land fo John Kneisly, decd. No 4 for 16 acres. adjoined land of Casper
Fordney, decd. Land was purchased 5/15/1813 from Michael Bear.

Samuel married Catharine PATTERSON 14 Apr 1813, Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Lancaster Co, PA. Catharine (daughter of Clemens PATTERSON and Maria Magdalena WEBER) was born 27 Nov 1794, Lancaster, Lancaster Co, PA; died 24 Dec 1849, Walker Twp, Juniata Co, PA; was buried Adams Center Cemetery, Walker Twp, Juniata Co, PA. Note:

The information for Sarah Ann Vanhorn's lineage wascompiled by my
Dad's Uncle Bill (I think). I haven't found any problems withwhat he
had (going back to the name Isaac Van Horn). He had lots of birth
dates for the John VanHorn generation and on. It appears by the fact
that he had so many dates that perhaps he had found a family Bible? I
don't know his sources, but the census records seem to show his
conclusions reasonable.

I had dates of 30 Jun 1816-3 Oct 1872
Internet (cemetery) has 21 Jun 1816-4 Oct 1872 (76-3-13)

Note, the first two children, John and Sarah appear to be named after Thomas's parents.

Were Nathan and Emma named after Margaret's? No...(they were her siblings)

Thomas married Margaret HELLINGS Abt 1839, Bucks Co, PA. Margaret (daughter of Tunis HELLINGS and Rachel BRELSFORD) was born 22 Sep 1808, Middletown Twp, Bucks Co, PA; died 6 Dec 1866, East Salem, Delaware Twp, Juniata Co, PA; was buried East Salem Presbyterian Church, East Salem, Delaware Twp, Juniata Co, PA. the will of Rachel Hellings, widow of Teunis mentions:
"To my Daughter Margaret who married Thomas Vanhorn to have one tenth
part of the real and Personal Estate only the life Right and at her Death
to be given to her Daughter Mary Ann Hellings".

(was Mary Ann the right name? or was this a daughter before being married to Thomas?)
(or a daughter who died young?)
(or Ann Ettinger who showed up in 1850?)

Other records confirm Rachel Helling's mention of the out-of-wedlock
children of her kids. Don't know who was the father of Mary Ann, but the
"spouse" I have listed as DontKnow was not really married to Margaret in 1838.
