Note that the 1900 census listed his first name as "Frederick". The family
bible has "Fredy". Everywhere else it is just "Fred". Still, he's probably
named for his grandfather Frederick Miller

I found these interesting. They were in a memory book from Fred and Minnie
given to their son Abner Yoderwho was killed in World War II. They show a bit
    more of the human side:

    Pitman, Pa Oct 24, 1942

though I've seen some people refer to him as "James Maurer Knerr", he's listed
as "James Monroe Knerr" on his death certificate, informant being Charles Knerr
(a son). James Monroe was also the name of James' son.

he's also listed as James Monroe Knerr on the delayed Certiface of Birth of my
    grandmother Minnie (Knerr) Yoder

It's interesting that James had children named Zeno and Ida, and his uncle Isaac
(brother of Charles) had a daughter Zeno Ida in 1870 in Schuylkill Haven. I've
heard that the Pitman Knerr's kept in touch with the Schuylkill Haven cousins.

I can't find James Knerr in the 1900census. Mom said the family might have
been in Tremont at one time (remembering from her Mom saying that).

Harrison's will mentions his heir Felix Yoder and also a Mary Yoder. I had thought
that maybe Mary was Harrison's single sister. Probably, it's his nephew Joel
Yoder's wife (Mary Wetzel). Harrison was living with Joel in 1900. Maybe Joel
married the Mary Wetzel who was Harrison's house keeper in 1870/80?? After raising
her, she married his nephew and they took him in during his old age. Note that the
first two children of Joel are Hannah and Harrison.

Joel and Mary were married 30 Apr 1881 at Kimmel Church

(perhaps Mary Wetzel was related to Harrison's sister Sarah who married a Wetzel?)
(or the Mary age 4, listed in Iowa, d/o Reuben Wetzel and Matilda?)
(maybe a daughter of one of Hannah's sisters?)

There is no tombstone for Harrison. His plot isshown on the map in the church
and the location matches the county death record. There seemed to be enough
room on the plot for him and his wife Hannah, though no dates are shown.

I'm uncertain when/where Hannah died. She was alive in 1880 according to the
census. She's probably buried next to Harrison since from the map in the church,
it looked like enough room for two persons to be buried in the plot (thereare no stones).

Description from military records: 5'6.5" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes,
    brown hair.

Married by Jacob Hepler, according to Civil War pension records

Pension application was once denied for "vicious habits" during the war. He
was treated for venereal disease during the Civil War.

Family story: Charles left his wife after getting his pension for approximately 20
years, then came back to his wife. He and his wife lived with different families
membersat different times. The story goes that they eventually got back
together. They sat together on the porch at James Knerr's house and made
up. Then they spent their last few years together, living in a small house that
was then builtfor them on the property (near the creek?).

Charles also was to have survived the war, but got shot in (outside?) a bar on
the way back from the Civil War. I also heard the shooter was a rebel. When
Charles was around later in life, he complained of his injury, and according to
relatives, he would have hisgrandson Jack Knerr pick out the BB's that came
to the surface with a knife (so it must have been a shotgun wound).

It's odd that his pension applicationmakes no reference to either a wound or a
disability because of it. Probablysince there was no record in his service record of
a real war time wound, it wouldn't have done any good bringing it up. But clearly,
everyone in the family seems to have known that Charles was shot in a bar related
    incident on the way back.

My Great Aunt Sue [Knerr] told me she had vague recollections of Charles. She
said the young boys would tease him but he'd say "you laugh, but people
    will remember me..."

Pension form of 1 Apr 1915 has this info:

My AuntSue [Knerr] remembers Catharina. She said that Catharine had told the
children that she was going to get a widow's pension and have lots of money
someday (after her husband died). The paper work shows that by the time the
government was done hassling her over some obvious clerical issues, she had
died and the check had to be returned.

There is some uncertainty if Joseph was a son ofDaniel W. Consider this
excerpt from Catharine (Maurer) Knarr's application for Civil War pension benefits:

On this 22, day of May AD 1917, personally appeared before me a Justice of the
Peace, in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oath, James M.
Knarr, age 45 years a resident of Pitman, RFD in the County of Schuylkill and State
of Pennsylvania, a Son of above named claimant, who saith that his mother the said
Catharine Knarr, is now absent minded and not able to follow and attend to her
business, he therefore in her stead offers in evidance the following:

We have found a record in the family Bible belonging to the Claimant's father, Daniel
    W. Maurer, and in thatBible is recorded the names and the date of each child's
births of the said Daniel W. Maurer,

Catharine Maurer, now the claimant born March 12, 1832.
Mary Maurer, Born February 23, 1834.
Anjalina Maurer, Born January 11, 1836,
Frank Maurer, Born Novemeber 28, 1838,
Hannah Maurer, Born October 22, 1841.
Magdalena and Aron Maurer, Twins, and were born in the year 1844.

In this record are no erasure nor alterations.
This record is a reliable one, being it is made in the family bible of the father of the
claimant, as it was the custom in prior generations to keep family records in Bibles.

The said claimant Catharine Knarr, was during the years 1850, and 1860, living
with her Grand-fatherJacob Maurer, in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, Penna,
at the place now called Pitman, so to me stated.

The claimants parents Daniel W. Maurer and Elizabeth Maurer, lived during the
years 1850 and 1860 in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, Penna., at the place
    now called Pitman.,

All the above namedchildren of said Daniel W, Maurer, and Elizabeth Maurer,
lived during the years 1850 and 1860, except Magdalena Maurer,

The said James M. Knarr, is well known to be reuputable and entitled to credit,
and who being duly sworn, to the best of his knowledge that the facts aforesaid
in relation as stated are correct and true; and further declares that I have not personal
interest. signed "James M. Knerr" and it looks like it was overwritten with "Knarr".

Notes from his writeup in Schuylkill County Biographies:

Smith, Daniel H., a merchant and dealer in farm implements at Haas, Pa., was
born in Eldred township, Schuylkill county, Oct 9, 1850, a son of John S.
and Judith (Herb) Smith, the father being a mechanic in Haas during all
of his mature years. He was a master at his trade of blacksmithing and was
able to design and make anything within the sphere of his business.

    *snip*

The subject of this sketch was educated in the public schools and at the age
of nineteen started on hisbusiness career independent of home counsels or

occupation, married Clara Hepler and resides at his parental home; Dirzah became
the wife of William Treon and resides at Locust Dale, Pa.

Mr Smith served an apprenticeship to the blacksmith's trade during his youth,
and worked at that business for thirty-four years. He owns a farm which he
conducts in connection withhis mercantile business at Haas. This includes a
full line of staple and fancy groceries, drugs, confectionery, tobacco and cigars,
farm implements, etc.He has been assessor of Eldred township for fifteen
years; served twelve years as a member of the township school board; has been
local agent of the North Western Mutual Fire Insurance Company for
twenty years; and has been postmaster at Haas for twenty-one years.

He is a man thoroughly well read, and a leader in the councils of Republicanism.
His friends are legion, and his acquaintance extends to the remotest corners
    of the county.
