    ********************************************************************** Dad's notes, 7/24/79
(copied from Robert E Conrad's notes after talking with his dad, R E Conrad Sr)

    1. Previously, Dad related to me the following:
    a) Mom, Aunt Mary Kerstetter and Uncles John and James (Hendersons) were
being reared in a Catholic Orphan's Home in Philadelphia

    b) John Henderson married a Polish girl in Delaware (Dover?)

    c) Then Mom and AUnt Mary were transferred to an O'Shaughnessy (?)
family in Lewisburg. This family was quite old when Mom and Aunt Mary
went there to live. The husband shot to death either his wife or himself.

    d) Then Mom was transferred to a Kelly family (about 1915) in Milton,
Pa, until about 16 yrs old. At the same time, AuntMary went to an O'Neill
family in Coatsville (and later to Sunbury).

    e) Then Mom ended up working in a silk mill in Sunbury and lived with the
Riegle family on Catawissa Ave across from the East End Hose Company.
That's when Dad met, courted Mom and married her!

    f) Aunt Mary, while in Sunbury stayed at the Zerbe Hotel (the Shreffler Pontiac
place now on Market Street near Eighth St).

At the same time, Tom Kerstetter was a bartender there. They married.

    g) Uncle Tom and Aunt Mary then went to Berrysburg to open up a Hotel there.
Tom Jr was born there. Tom Sr borrowed $1000 from a whiskey salesman
    to take over the hotel.

    h) Then Uncle Tom and Aunt Mary went to Gratz to open a hotel there (which
later burned down). then to Elizabethville, then to hotel in Dillsburg,
and finally to Camp Hill (they had a used car garage on Market St.
not far from the Rt 15 bypass traffic intersection).

    i) My grandfather SimonPeter Conrad was placed on a Scanlon farm about
1870 or 1871 and used to workhis ass off there. Durin ghte flood of 1889,
he worked on a RR bridge at Mexico, Pa.

He was supposed to be a policeman, according to Dad. Dad heard this as a kid,
but there seems to be no other source to confirmthis. I may have been overly
restrictive in my search by focusing on the policeman stuff.

I'm not convinced that Susan McDevitt is the mother.
5/04 - no, I think this is OK.

    1) there's no reason to think that the baptism that Anna had was wrong. For
the Catholic Church to have given her the wrong information meant there
John Henderson and Susan had a daugther Anna at the same time, Susan
died, and "another" Anna Henderson disappears from the records or becomes
    an orphan after 1898

    2) Anna talked with her brothers who would have been old enough to know her
parents and confirm or deny her parents' names. Anna refered to her being
Irish because of the McDevitt connection to other people.

Problem - 5/04. Now that I have John N Henderson marrying Susan McDevitt
in 1893, how could they have both been the parents of John Henderson
and James Henderson? Or were they really half brother (and John
lied about not being married before on his marriage license). Or maybe
they had lived together first? Or were married, but not in a Catholic Church?

Solution - 6/04. Got files from Children's Aid Society. Pages on John,
Nannie, and Susan (later Mary) show... Mother was in Home for Consumptives.
Father was "worthless". Grandmother "Susan McDevitt" came to check on them.
They tried to find the father, who was known to hang out at a saloon, but never
found him. Last attempt was 1904 before Nannie was adopted by Shaughnessy
family. But it puts to rest whether John N Henderson and Susan McDevitt
were the parents. It would seem thatJohn and Susan were to be the parents
of John as well, although clearly John was born before they were married.
(or they had been married before outside the Catholic Church).

Problem - what happened to James Henderson? I removed him for now. I
think there was confusion about "John and James" and it was thesons of
    John Sr. - 7/14/05

    Notes:

given that the marriage of Mary A. Henderson says mother was named "Mary",
I wonder if this is the right mother's name.

Note - Mary listed her mother as Mary and it wasn't until a letter came back
from a church in Philadelphia thatthe mother of "Anna" Henderson was
    listed as Susan (McDevitt).

Still, I'm starting to rethink this. It would seem that Anna had talked with
her brothers on several occasions, who would have been old enough
to remember what her parent's name was. I doubt she would have kept
refering to John and Susan if she found out later these weren't her parents.
It would just seem that up until her 20's, she (and her sister) didn't
know anything about her parents with anycertainty (except perhaps
that her father was John Henderson).

A picture of Anna and Mary says "taken 3/30/08" and has
    Susie Henderson
    Nan "

But the picture shows Anna (Nanna) and Mary. Why did it say Susie?
A reference or mistaken reference to the mother? Part of the border
was cut off that might have had more text to the left of the names.

IGI has this record which seems to be a baptism date?

though I've seen some people refer to him as "James Maurer Knerr", he's listed
as "James Monroe Knerr" on his death certificate, informant being Charles Knerr
(a son). James Monroe was also the name of James' son.

he's also listed as James Monroe Knerr on the delayed Certiface of Birth of my
    grandmother Minnie (Knerr) Yoder

It's interesting that James had children named Zeno and Ida, and his uncle Isaac
(brother of Charles) had a daughter Zeno Ida in 1870 in Schuylkill Haven. I've
heard that the Pitman Knerr's kept in touch with the Schuylkill Haven cousins.

I can't find James Knerr in the 1900census. Mom said the family might have
been in Tremont at one time (remembering from her Mom saying that).
