    East Salem Presbyterian

    Note:

The information for Sarah Ann Vanhorn's lineage wascompiled by my
Dad's Uncle Bill (I think). I haven't found any problems withwhat he
had (going back to the name Isaac Van Horn). He had lots of birth
dates for the John VanHorn generation and on. It appears by the fact
that he had so many dates that perhaps he had found a family Bible? I
don't know his sources, but the census records seem to show his
    conclusions reasonable.

    I had dates of 30 Jun 1816-3 Oct 1872
    Internet (cemetery) has 21 Jun 1816-4 Oct 1872 (76-3-13)

Note, the first two children, John and Sarah appear to be named after Thomas's parents.

Were Nathan and Emma named after Margaret's? No...(they were her siblings)

Thomas married Margaret HELLINGS Abt 1839, Bucks Co, PA. Margaret (daughter of Tunis HELLINGS and Rachel BRELSFORD) was born 22 Sep 1808, Middletown Twp, Bucks Co, PA; died 6 Dec 1866, East Salem, Delaware Twp, Juniata Co, PA; was buried East Salem Presbyterian Church, East Salem, Delaware Twp, Juniata Co, PA. John is listed as a son of Isaac in Marvin's book and also Robert's
Annals ofMontgomery County. I haven't seen anything to contradict
that other than possibly the fact that John seems to show up both
in Juniata County, PA and Ohio in 1860 (!).

mentions " VanHorn Family History of Hancock Co OH" as a source

    Pvt in Revolution
Oath of Allegiance 12 Oct 1778 in Bucks County (this Isaac?)

While the Quakers shunned military service, it would seem that Isaac Vanhorn
was not associated with this church until he married Mary Betts (a youngQuaker
girl). He is supposedly buried there with Mary.

Note: a note on rootsweb says Isaac was disowned in 1792. True?

Note: at Middletown MM, 5/1/1792, testimony against Sarah Vanhorn, late Twining.

Isaac is mentioned in the writeup of his son Abraham in the History of Bucks County.
Since it seems the author was talking with Isaac Van Horn, born 1813 about
his grandparents and greatgrandparents, the relationship of Abraham, son of
Isaac, son of Abraham seems pretty certain.

The children are as listed in the will. Were Mary and Rebecca from Isaac's first wife?
(the article above says Mary Betts had 8 children with Isaac). Answer: Yes, see wills
of Jeremiah and Elisabeth Vastine that mention Isaac's first wife and children by name.
It seems that most researchers have ignored Isaac's second wife, Rebecca Matthew?.
Actually, Rebecca would be the second wife (or girlfriend or whatever).

From History of Bucks County, pg 1029:
Isaac Van Horn, retired, P.O. Richboro, was born in Northampton township, Bucks
county, May 2, 1813, his parents being Abraham and Susan (Ruckman) Van Horn.
His maternal ancestors were Welsh and Scotch-Irish, and his paternal ancestors
were Low Dutch and English. Abraham Van Horn, great-grandfather of Isaac,
came to Northampton township in 1720, and located in the lower end of it,
the place now being owned by Mrs. Paul. He was a farmer, and is buried at the
Van Horn and Feaster burying-ground. Isaac Van Horn, his son, wasborn in
Northampton township, and died in 1831. His second wife was Mrs. Mary Betts,
by whom he had eight children. She died about seventeen years beforehim, and
the are buried in the Friends' burying-ground at Wrightstown, both being members
of the Society of Friends. etc.

    and on pg 1019:
James R. Van Horn, retired, P.O. Newtown, was born in Northampton township,
this county, March 21, 1818, and is a son of Abram and Susan (Ruckman)
Van Horn. His paternal grandfather was Isaac Van Horn, a native of Northampton
township, a farmer by occupation, and a son of Abram Van Horn, who settled in
    Northampton townshipabout 1720.

Some people have another son Isaac Jr born about 1787. But he's not mentioned in
any reliable source that I can see. Maybe he died young? source?

Marvin's book, Van Horn Family History (long shown to be full of errors) has list of
children including Isaac, born 5 Jan 1787, married Margary Ann Smith d/o
General Samuel Smith, Apr 14, 1825 by Rev PO Stidiford. (page 336) (1929)

(this same information shows up in The Welcome Claimants, pg 90)

From Beers History of Washington County, pg 35:

THOMAS MARTINDELL. Among the wealthy, enterprising and generally respected
citizens of East Bethlehem township, none are more favorably known than this
prominent agriculturist. He is a native of the county, born October 28, 1824, in West
Pike Run township, where he was reared on his father's farm, and educated at
the subscription schools of the vicinity, and a select school in Centreville, taught by
    John Reid.

ThomasMartindell, his grandfather, was of English descent, and one of the early
settlers of Bucks county, Penn., where he passed almost his entire life, dying at
the advanced age of ninety-five years. His wife was Mary Booth, who was
descended from an old and well-known family of Bucks county. Thomas and
Mary Martindell were the parents of the following children, all now deceased:
Sarah (who married John Van Horn), Rebecca, Mary and William.

William Martindell was born September 6, 1793, in Bucks county, Penn., where he
was reared to farming pursuits. When a young man he removed to and settled in
West Pike Run township, this county, where he learned shoemaking, although he
never worked much at the trade, his time and attention being too much taken up on the farm. He marriedElizabeth, daughter of John Fleming, in his lifetime a prominent
farmer of Washington county, and the young couple then took up their home on a
farm in West Pike Run township, where they passed the remainder of their lives.
Their children were Mary Ann (Mrs. McMillan), Catherine (Mrs. Baker) and Thomas.
The mother of this family was called from earth April 7, 1833, the father
April 6, 1852; he was a Quaker in religious faith, in politics a member of the
    Whig party.

birthdate from James N Davis - internet

    Notes:

I have Mary listed as a daughter of William Booth and Rebecca by pure
speculation for now (organize my notes for now). The basis is:

    1) here were no Booth's in Bucks County at this time,

    2) William and Rebecca had a daugther Mary Booth in 1771, perfect for this marriage
    c1790,

    3) Thomas and Mary had among their first kids a William and a Rebecca,

    4) most of the Booth's at thattime were living in Delaware County,

    5) the Booth's were Quakers, like the Martindales. (maybe William Booth died and
    his widow moved to Bucks??)

    Add, 1/1/2001:
    6) Mary's brother Benjamin, came to Wrightstown Monthly Meeting before going
west (after their father's death). Benjamin went Booth went to thesame general
area as William Martindale (son of Thomas Martindale and Mary Booth).

    notes:
To answer your question about why I thought there was a Mary Horton. According to
Vol 4 of Hinshaws Quaker Encyclopedia, there was a Mary Horton (form Booth) who
was churched from Westland Quaker Monthly Meeting in East Bethlehem Pa.

Since there are two Mary's in that era, one is probably married to Thomas Martindell, and
    the other widow Horton.

    Children:
    1. William MARTINDELL was born 6 Sep 1793, Wrightstown Twp, Bucks Co, PA; died 6 Apr 1852, West Pike Run Twp, Washington Co, PA.

the connection between the Van Horns at the Vanhorn/Feaster cemetery and

but doesn't mention it when the others are listed.

T"he VanSkiver/Vanscivers came to New Amsterdam in 1600s. Original spelling VanSchuyven/er. There is a VanSciver genealogy that will probably help you: VanSciver Genealogy: Early Historical and Family Events by Charlotte VanSciver Miloszar. In that book there is a reference to an Abraham VanHorn who married for his second wife: Marie Hoesen, widow of Jan Wouterse Van Schuyven in 1755/ Abraham was son of Barent Christiansen Van Horn and Geertje Dircks, born 1695 at Minakaque. Abraham lived in Bucks county. According to the VS genealogy there were no known issue of this second marriage of Abraham." (this was a note from Diane VanSkiver Gagel).

Schyven, who died 1777 in Bucks Co. All children by Mary, they were
Barent, Mary, Jeremiah, Geertje, Abram, Martha, Jacob, David, and
    Isaac."

From Van Sciver Genealogy by Charlotte Van Sciver Miloszar (pg 41):

Van Horn's second Marriage, NJ Lic and Bond date Aug 11, 1755 Maria Hosen,
Widow of Jan Wouterse Van Schuyven. No known issue of this marriage. Her
son William married Martha Van Horn the same year. Abraham Van Horn is the

[Di]rks, was born Sept. 12, 1695 at Minkaque. Abraham Van Horn lived in
    Bucks County Pa..."

From History of Bucks County, pg 94:
... Abraham Van Horn, born in Bergen, New Jersey, died in Northampton,
Bucks county, in 1773, onfarm of 290 acres received by deed from his father in

sons, Barnard, Isaac, Abraham, David, Jacob, and Jeremiah, and three
daughters, Mary wife of Derrick Krewson, Charity, and Martha, who married
    a Van Sciver.

From Ellwood Roberts' Biographical Annals, 1904: Montgomery Co, PA
    http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/montgomery/roberts/roberts108.html
Abraham Van Horn was the first of this family to settle in Northampton township,
Bucks county, locating there about the year 1720. He married Martha Dungan...

    Notes:

I did have the marriage date of 6 Jul 1718, from Marvin book. Dropped (source?)

Mary being the daugther of Jeremiah is based on the Clarke/Dungan book. I'm
not real happy with that because it seems to based on the idea that these were
left over children named Dungan, and they didn't know who belonged to Jeremiah,
so by process of elimination, they ended up here. I don't even know the original
source that says she *was* a Dungan! So for now, I'm leaving it in.

Note in Clement Dungan's will of 1732, he mentions brother Jeremiah sole
executor and has someone pay Jeremiah Dungan's youngest (living?)
daughter Mary. That seems to create problems for Mary marrying Abraham
Vanhorn in 1718 and being younger than Martha who was born in 1704!! One
would think that this is a reference to a young and single Mary.

    Some issues:
why did Mary not have children from being married in 1718 until about 1725. Also,
she'd have to be of child bearing age in 1745.

Answer - until I see a source, I'm discounting the marriage of 6 Jul 1718. There
are plenty of mistakes in Marvin's book(!). I do think there must be a source (?)
that says Mary is a Dungan. It'sinteresting that Abraham had a son Jeremiah, and
I have seen some use of family names within this community at this time. Jeremiah
Dungan did live in the area, and he did have a daughter Mary who could be the
    right age.

Note - LDS has marriage circa 1731 (another LDS source has the 1718 date)
