Maybe Samuel married Maria Patterson first, then he married Maria's sister Catharine?
Since I didn't see the original record, maybe the marriage isn't really to "Maria"?

Note - there were Pattersons in Hempfield in 1790 (but can't find in 1800)

pg 328-9:
REV. JOSEPH K. KNISELY, now of Flemington, Clinton county, Pa., was born on a
farm near Port Royal, Juniata county, Pal, February 8,, 1853. He is the son of
Abraham and Catharine (Kieffer) Knisely. His grandfather, Samuel Knisely, was born
in Lancaster county, 1791, removed to Juniata county,and married Catharine
Patterson, born in 1793. They resided in Juniata county, until their death; that of his
wife occuring in 1849, and his in 1864. His children were
John, a carpenter, who died at Lewistown, Pa., 1893;
Samuel, died in 1871, near Mexico, Juniata county, Pa.;
Elizabeth (Mrs. Kauffman), of Cedar Rapids, Iowa;
Abraham, father of Rev. Mr. Knisely;
Mrs. Mary Kauffman, who died in 1862;
Kate (Mrs. Ferner), died in 1858;
George, of Millerstown, Perry county, Pa.;
Jacob, who went to California in 1848, and is now a well-to-dofarmer near
Quincy, Cal.;
Joseph, a barge builder, of Allegheny City, Pa.;
Barbara (Mrs. Holman), of Mifflintown, Pa.;

Two of these werein the war of the Rebellion,
George, who served eleven months in Company B, Two
Hundred and Second Pennsylvania Volunteers, and William, of the Forty-ninth
Pennsylvania Volunteers.

(deed EE, pg 354, dated 3/1/1786) between John and George Kneisly, covering a
certain tract in Manheim Twp, inherited jointly from their father George. "It being
the same tract of land which the Proprieties of Penna by their patent dated 7/22/1747
did grant unto the said George Kneisly, as by said patent recorded at Phila. in Patent
Book A, Vol 12, pg 519 may appear.

Deed NN, pg 59, 5/6/1789, shows arrangement of water right between John and
brother George. "George Kneisly of Manheim Twp has a tract of land, etc and John
Kneisly of Hempfield Twp has a water grist mill oyl mill, and hemp mill, and tract of
land adjoining George's land. .on Little Conestoga Creek..."

Deed book 1, pg 159, 5/12/1810, John Nisely of Hempfield Twp and wf Magdalena sold
30A to Christian Miller. Said John Nicely had purchased 200A of Henry Gochenaur in
1783. This 30 acres was part of that tract. Deed also shows John Nicely
but signed "John Kneissly".

"Mills - Kneisley's mills were built by George Kneisley, at the head of
Kauffman's Run, about half a mile north of the Paxton and Lancaster
road, prior to the Revolution. They consisted of a grist-, hemp-,
and saw-mill. The property is now owned by C.N. Nolt. The water
which drives this mill comes from a spring a few hundred yards
above, and is one of thefinest in the county, but steam-power
has been added."
